Hi. Thinking of pulling the trigger on a Cobalt exhaust/silencer. After any people’s experience’s / thoughts with the them either positive or negative. Thanks
I have a Cobalt back box on my NC. Fitted in 2023. Has a bit more of a low frequency sporty sound to it but not intrusive at any speed (I think the tickover is actually quieter than OEM). The two exhaust tips are a bit beefier than standard. There is a drone about 1500rpm when slowing down off the throttle but I don’t find this a problem. The weld on the metal strap that goes between the box and the pipe that enters the back box came undone last autumn but a local garage welded this up and it’s been fine since. The finish seems pretty good and is certainly holding up though only about 8,000 miles since fitted. I do notice that the left hand tailpipe soots up a bit, though I have heard this from other owners too. I got it for less than £300 when there was an offer so overall I’ve been pretty happy with it.
Sound is subjective but droning is worth a mention as some seem more effected than others. There’s a Cobalt on FBMP with carbon tips as I write.
I’ve an aftermarket jobbie and it’s quite easy to swap in and out with the standard box ( ten minutes even without lifting the rear end! )
The standard box isn’t perfect and neither is my ILMotorsport. So I just swap them every so often. What I’m saying is your bog standard Mazda item isn’t half bad so don’t bin it😀
Well pulled the trigger on the Cobalt. Not fitted yet but first impressions are good. Seems a very well made item. What I also like is that the original exhaust does not have to be cut to fit it. Will put my thoughts on what its actually like after its been fitted on here.
I really like mine,
Same experience as others. Not raucous but makes the car sound a bit fruitier. The left hand tip does soot up a lot faster than the right.
I’ve got one with a full stainless system (decat mani, sports cat middle) and the muffler was a gigantic pain to remove. They started welding them on with the NC2 for some unknown reason. Had to take the midpipe off with the back box and hack them apart.
Even with the full exhaust, the Cobalt isn’t droney at all (everso slight resonance at 1800RPM roof down, I have not yet added sound deadening to the boot which should fix it) but it’s not quiet. It must be about 2-3x the volume of the OEM muffler when I swap them. At idle, it’s barely any different - a bit more presence and bass. At full chat it’s fantastic, not obnoxious but you’ll annoy people on the pavement if you redline it.
Very high quality item, lovely welds and looks. The sound is really smooth, trumpet-like and glassy - but nice and aggressive, loads of character. Fitment is perfect. It’s a fibreglass-packed type and a very small muffler so it’s very light but doesn’t muffle a lot. Absolutely not as droney as my much bigger Malian sport muffler (that is BAD).
I do not regret my choice one bit.
Well had the Cobalt fitted today. Early days yet but the car sounds SO MUCH better than stock, and not over noisy or boomy. Should get even better once it has carboned in a bit after a few miles. Happy Bunny here.
Had mine for about 9K now, all of the comments regarding to noise are spot on.
Recently had a BBR mid pipe and 4-1 fitted. Pops on deceleration are just divine.
Thought about the BBR back box also, but at double ish the price its just not needed.
