Cobra Exhaust questions.

Hi all.

My first post (be gentle).

Am seriously considering purchasing a Cobra sports exhaust for my 2009 1.8 MX5. a couple of questions.

  1. I’m not really the ‘boy racer’ type so is the exhaust bearable for every day use - sound wise? i.e. not too distracting.

  2. Is there any noticeable (or indeed any) change in the cars performance after fitting?

  3. My car is regularly serviced with the main dealer, do they get ‘sniffy’ about after market changes like this.

  4. Does the car need any other adjustments or alterations after fitting re-mapping etc. or is it just a straight swap?

  5. Are there any noted downsides to fitting one of these, i.e. increased fuel consumption or stress on other parts?

Many thanks in advance.

Hello doomjeffs

There are to my knowledge 3 Cobra back boxes suitable for the MK3

Race; Road; King Cobra. Are you planning to change the O/E manifold for a 4 branch & a complete stainless steel

centre section plus a re-map?  If you go this route then I suggest, along with many other MK3 owners,

you fit the King Cobra (the biggest Cobra back box).  As I am sure you do not want to cause offence to

your neighbours!

Other owners who have replaced just the back box will be able to advise on which back box

will be suitable, there are a number of alternative exhaust systems to Cobra.

Regards

Keith

Hi,

I currently have a race type cobra exhaust on my 2.0 sport, I fitted it about three weeks ago, as I thought the OEM one was a little underwhelming. I’m certainly no boy racer, late forties , but wanted a better tone to the exhaust note with a few pops thrown in for good measure. I have been running a cobra race exhaust on my Subaru for a couple of years now and love the sound that makes, which has improved over time to a rich rumble, so for me it was an easy choice to make.

  1. A little boomy when you first start up but that soon reduces once you get on the move and becomes a more subtle throaty rumble, which does let out a few pops when you down shift, but certainly nothing which I feel is over the top and doesn’t attract any unwanted attention. Check out youtube as there are plenty of videos there or on the cobra website they have a few posted by customers.

  2. Nope.

  3. Can’t say as I use an independent.

  4. No just straight swap.

  5. Not that I have noticed on the MX5, possibly too early to tell, but certainly seen no ill effects on the Subaru after 2+ years (although my mpg has always been shocking).

Not sure where you are based but if anywhere near Bicester I’d be happy to give you a demo.

All the best,

Jeff

We have a Cobra Sport Race on our 2.0 Sport, its a daily driver. I did add some sound proofing to the boot but we both love it.

As above, if you are anywhere near us, I’ll gladly take you for a spin.

Many thanks for the replies.

Nickland jane. Thanks for those answers, Yes, It is the cobra sport back box that i am thinking about, not the whole exhaust so it sounds like a fairly simple swap.

I have viewed most of the videos on youtube & have to say it does sound rather nice, would like to hear it in the flesh so to speak, but i think I’ll go ahead quickly (whilst the wife is currently making favorable comments).

I’m near Bristol by the way. Bought my MX5 just over a year ago & after marrying my wife was the best thing i ever did.

Many thanks again.

Sorry, my last comment was meant for Narmerjeff. Thanks for the offer Nickland, are you anywhere near bath - bristol?

Sorry, we are in East Sussex. Although we will be in the New Forest next weekend.

I think I’ll bite bullet & just do it. Cheers.

Forgot to mention I managed to get 10% discount on the cobra website by just putting the item in my basket and then logged out of my account without completing the purchase, next day I received an email from cobra giving me a discount code.

Hi Doomjeffs,

Can highly recommend the Cobra. I had one on my mk3, in fact the galaxy grey MX5 on the Cobra website is my car, with the race type back box fitted - I drove up to Sheffield to have it fitted.

Only thing I didn’t like was the fact that the boxes are not supplied with the tail pipes welded in place, but you have to clamp it all together once it is lined up. The clamps are not made from stainless so do rust. I think the earlier ones were supplied all welded up, so if you get a used one, it might be worth looking out for an earlier one.

If you don’t like it, you can easily go back to standard and sell the Cobra on.

Cheers

Phil

Thanks, that’s made my mind up, i’ll go for it. Cheers everyone.

Hi, I’m going to grow a spanner in the works now, have you looked at a go-perform system? They were at the spring rally and at the national with one of their exhausts on a Supercup car.

I have the Cobra race fitted to mine. As has been said the clamps that hold it all together will rust eventually and cause the tail pipes etc to become loose. I bought some stainless “Mikalor” clamps off E-bay when mine started rusting and all sorted now!
If you are also planning a manifold and centre section swap plus remap in the future then listen to the advice that Keith W has given.
I love mine for my daily commute but it can become highly annoying on long journeys.

I do have the manifold fitted and remapped too.

Does anyone know where to get hold of a ‘King Cobra’?  Looking on their website I can only see the ‘race’ and ‘street’ listed.

Cheers,

Josh

The ‘King Cobra’ is supplied by Roddisons Motorsports in Sheffield.

I believe it was developed, by Paul Roddison and Cobra Exhausts, so as to pass the noise limit levels on track.

Thanks Chris,  I’ll give Rodders a call and check out the price etc.

Cheers,

Josh
