Cobra exhausts, any experience of them for your ND

  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __ exhausts

Hi my fellow MX-5 fanciers!

I’ve been thinking for some reason or other (not sure) of selling my MX-5 and the only car I’d consider is the totally different kettle, being a Merc SL 350/400. 20 years ago I had a R129 and it was the most loveliest of roadsters to tool about in. However I love my 30, as do my wife and kids and that really means something to me. Also, other folk seem to like it and as far as I’m aware it’s the only one knocking about in Sheffield. There is an RF in Matlock and I’ve seen I think RPM 260 a few times in the area.

Perhaps I fancy a change as an average mileage SL is very good value despite, it’s higher running costs. Also on longer journeys I’m getting a lot of hamstring pain in my right leg, and no amount of gentle stretching seems to ease it. Maybe the SL’s Nappa leather seats will resolve such irritation’s.

However, it’s probably an unwise decision as I really think the 30 is already a classic and will always be a sought after MX-5. And of course the car in most respects is utterly brilliant. The SL, one could consider an icon and the later R231’s have a definite appeal, but my head tells me the running costs would bother me and I’d rather be shelling out for trips abroad and kids upcoming expenses, than on a large SL.

So I’m thinking that maybe before I visit BBR to supercharge my 30, I should upgrade the exhaust, as to my eye that is the cars visual weak spot.

So I’m in Sheffield as are Cobra exhausts and I like the look of the centre exhaust and diffuser. Has anybody experience of that exhaust and does the diffuser look stock?

Either way going to call them in the morning.

For the money I’ll be forking out I could be looking at Porsche 718 2.0T, but again higher running costs and I’d be spending at 32k t least to get a decent one. Plus, as with my NC BBR200 that I spent 6k on, you don’t really get any of that back on resale.

Any thoughts of advice or discouragement are most welcome.

Cheers Nick

PS saw the most famous non MX-5 today, yes the Passat with MX-5 as it’s reg. Cool!

I was all set to buy a used V8 Mercedes GLC63 in January but dithered at the last second and bought a brand new MX-5 instead. The Mercs running costs and the fake leather were putting me off but a deciding factor was that nobody will ask me to do an airport run in the Mazda. I also sold my BMW yesterday as it hadn’t been used since I got the new car.

I would like to have the diffuser with a pipe either side but I’m not so keen on the single pipe one, the twin pipes on mine will do until the standard back box gives out.

Brilliant, that’s quite a difference. I think I’d be happy with middle or either side. I just want to know if the diffuser will look stock or not. The MX is amazing, I’m on my 4th. I think to have a sane life a reliable car really helps and as we know the MX is good for your sanity!

This may sound like an odd suggestion, but if you’re getting pain in your right leg consider trying lowering the seat with the Jass rails. These drop the back of the seat, but keep the front near standard higher, providing lots more support to the back of the leg. I suffered similar pain in my Tesla (surprisingly straight-legged driving position) but don’t have any in my lowered seated MX-5.

I meant to add that they do a subtle looking one that’s not too blatant.

That the one I’m thinking. The car is well set up Rodders with CRD;s and corner weighted etc, so this would look great.

Good suggestion, though harder to get out? I’m 57 and 6ft and not as lithe as I use to be.

A little harder. Just need to keep doing the squats. I’m 52 an 6’4”. I’m going to keep going until my knees say no more

And everything else. I’m partial to a kettle bell and yoga with assorted You Tube ladies!
