Coil springs - Mazda or Sachs?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __nC2 PRHT
  2. I’m based near: __glasgow
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __suspension

This morning my car has failed the MoT because of a broken front coil spring.

The garage has suggested I replace both front springs and have quoted about £100 each for Sachs springs (parts only). I had a look on mx5parts who are selling Mazda springs for £72.

Are the Sachs springs likely to be better or should I go for the Mazda ones?

Car is the basic 1.8 model with standard suspension. I’m doing about 3000 miles a year mainly on motorways

Thanks

My feeling is that you should get the exact ‘Mazda’ springs that match the ones on the car. In doing so you will reduce the likelihood of any problems occurring.

If you speak to MX5 parts direct rather than order online they will probably ask for the chassis number because they say Mazda were prone to fit different bits from time to time.

Definitely both at the same time
Why not get rid of the 4x4 look and massively improve the handling by going a little lower, -25mm maybe and getting geometry done? It will need setting up after spring replacement anyway.
Just a thought.

I’m surrounded by speed bumps - they are in virtually every street locally, and some of them are absolutely brutal. If the car was any lower I shudder to think of the outcome. Much as I like the lowered look, it just wouldn’t be worth the hassle

I think it was only the NC1 that had that was jacked up. Just before I got my car ‘06 at 46k it had failed on two front springs broken. I wonder how common this is and does age affect this issue?

I’m on 57k miles and the car is almost sixteen years old, so can’t complain too much. As I mentioned in an earlier post, we are surrounded by speed bumps which can’t be great for the springs.

About two weeks ago a new and quite high bump was installed at our local sports centre but hadn’t been painted, so in the early morning gloom I didn’t spot it - went over it doing about 20mph and the car absolutely thumped down! I now wonder if that’s what did the damage
