Just had a set of PI adjustable coilovers fitted to my Mk1. Rather pleased with its new ride height, dropped approx 5cm. Firm ride but drastically reduced body roll when cornering hard 
. Now saving up for the compulsory trip to WIM

Limited suspension travel will always be a “bit firm”. You could further reduce body roll with heavier anti-roll bars.
My preference is softer springs with more travel & strong damper settings especially with low profile tyres.
Then again, I have to endure the jibes about going around with my arse in the air!
