Collapsible tyres

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __MK3
  2. I’m based near: __That London
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Tyres

Evening all.

I have seen recently whilst down a YouTube rabbit hole that there is such a thing as a collapsible tyre. Vredestein do them for certain VWs and I am wondering if they could be an option for us MK3 owners. I currently lug about a massive 17 inch steel wheel with a skinny tyre on it to get me home but it’s ridiculously heavy, takes up the entire boot and is a pain to get in and out of the boot because it really does fill the boot and causes scratches on the trim. A 16" alloy with one of these collapsible tyres on would be much lighter and fit in the boot much easier.
Anyone know if you can get them in the UK and where?

why do you bother with a spare? its not like the flat tyre/wheel will fit the boot so what is the point?
I have a breakdown recovery, an electric pump, a tire repair inflation canister and an empty boot.

The flat does fit in the boot, it’s flat so it’s smaller than normal.

I use my car for work. I don’t like being late. The AA in and around London are not the quickest so being able to get there by my own methods is preferable.

is what I keep in the boot

I keep something similar on the bike.

Usually when I get a puncture it’s chucking it down, dark and at the side of the M11. I can get the spare changed in 5 minutes by feel alone so it’s still my preferred option. I just want a lighter more compact spare.

What you need is a Hyundai Coupé space-saver spare with a 125/70R16 tyre. It fits in the boot and just clears the front brake calipers, unless you have bigger calipers than standard.

You’ll also need a Mazda jack (mine is from an old Mazda 6 via eBay, but they all seem to be the same) which has its own compartment on the driver’s side, and a wheel brace (or a breaker bar and 21mm socket for an easier life).

Ive already got that setup but its a bit big n bulky. The tyres i am thinking off literally shrink down to the rim when deflated so a full size 16 inch wheel will take up less space that the space saver setup we already have
