Comprehensive Insurance for Retired Members ( over 65 ).

My first premium as a Mazda MX5 owner was over four hundred pounds.

With an unblemished driving licence over fifty years duration, surely I

should be able to do better than this.

For the past fifteen years I have been on classic car insurance ,which does not accumulate n.c.b.

Can any fellow poster suggest any suitable insurers ?

      prospero.

I got a quote of £145 last week for my MK2 as all my other cars have the NCB this one was no NCB.

We live in rural Aberdeenshire so that would help.

Just go on go one of the car insurance compare sites like confused.com

Just under £200 with Direct Line for 2.0l 57 reg Mk3, 62 year old retired owner.

Zero no claims as it replaced a company car.

just had my renewal quote from Saga  £93.50

Hi,

I’m in my second year of MX5 ownership coming from a history of company car driving and being a named driver on my wife’s insurance. I’m 62. Insured with a company called One Insurance Ltd. I’m paying £220 a year fully comp’ with my wife as a named driver. Like you a clean licence. There are decent deals out there, best of luck finding one.

Regards,

Jeff.

Saga! How do I explain that to the kids and keep my cred?

Give LV a call, I got my Mk3 Sport and a new Seat Toledo insured for £460 last year, they mirrored my NCD on my daily driver (Seat) to the Mk3.

I am over 60 yrs old, just.

Aviva multicar insured a Mk3.75 MX-5 (wife) and a 2litre Focus (me) for £167 each with £55 discount and I also got £60 back on Quidco - a result. £219 for both cars fully comp.

Albeit we have over 10years NCD and are both early 60s and live in low crime area of Central Scotland.

I got a good deal from Churchill. I had no NCB after retiring from a van driving job.

I’m just phoning round for quotes too. I currently pay under £300 with a classic policy, but would prefer a non classic policy so I can accrue some ncd for when I change cars. Not good news so far.

LV want £3300, no I didn’t type too many 0’s

Aviva want over £9000, or rather they have no interest in insuring me.

Direct Line just over £600

Saga just over £1300

Churchills  £450. But a £650 excess on the policy.

Chris Knott £345 with £200 excess. An everyday policy with no restrictions.

The search continues, I’ll try the specialists next week.

bloody hell, that’s stupid; are you over 110 years old by any chance

It’s the cost of living in London Joe.

I’m 51, with 27 years driving a Taxi in one of the worlds busiest cities with maximum ncd on 3 separate policies. The car insurance market is very fickle.

I just got off the phone with ‘greenlight’ one of the specialist insurers who informed me they just don’t quote for my postcode. But in their favour, they did pass on the name of Chris Knott. Another specialist who I hadn’t heard of, and they’ve given the best quote so far by a country mile. The search will continue on Monday.

I would have thought you & your fellow cabbies would be a good bet for insuring with 100s of thousands of miles experience.

my saga ins last december was £140 by the way

As with all insurance, shop around for the best quotes

I also have a London Post Code and have settled with Adrian Flux (not Flux on line), Mk2.5 - 10,000 miles - full no claims, £261.60.  The next best quote was Footman James at £284.00.  Interestingly, Footman James were by far the best quote for classic insurance for the Mk1, 5,000 miles - flat rate policy - £100.60.  The same cover with Adrian Flux was £256.00, huge difference!

Keep shopping and good luck.

Before buying my MX5 I used google insurance quotation service to compare insurance costs for different models.  One reason I ended choosing a 1.6 MK1 was that it was half the price of a 1.8 or a MK2 of any engine size.  Using the google service it was interesting to see how some insurance companies were very competitive on some models but really expensive on others.  Other factors that increased the price was mileage so my insurance is only for 5k miles.  Using for anything else other than social, domestic and pleasure boosted the price, but I ended up adding driving to work as not doing so was too inconvenient. One particular gripe I have is that a number of clubs say that they have discount schemes for members with certain insurance companies including MOC, but when I asked about I was told the premium had to be at a certain level before it applied. One last thing is modifications. Any modifications that relate to increasing the speed or performance of the car can bump up the price enormously.  Best of luck and like other contributors to this thread I think you have to just get a lot of quotes and don’t forget to bargain, they’ll always usually drop their prices to match the lowest.

Renewed today with Admiral for 196. Not the cheapest on the Meerkat by about 30 but at least a better known company, and less hassle as I had been with them previously for a long time and they knew my unblemished history. Garaged, 5000 miles, no commuting, retired, alas still living in London.
Last year was with John Lewis, but this year they wanted too much - 352 ouch!

£196. There’s a coincidence. Footman James have just taken my business at £196. Another classic policy unfortunately. But they agreed to a £2500 valuation, and only have a £50 excess. 3000 mile limit.

To Prospero (the OP):

You don’t say if your 5 is an Import and/or if it has any “mods” (even just cosmetic); either of those can grossly influence your quoted premium, or even decline insurance. Esp if you mention “track day driving” etc…

I’d have thought, one of the specialist insurers as mentioned above, should come up with the goods. I’ve used RS Classic Ins for the last couple of years (Mk 2 RS Import with cosmetic mods).

Regards, Bill

I’ve been signed up to a Quidco account for ages, but never used it, as it seemed a bit of a faf.

I just wondered how the logistics worked for you. Does the insurance company show a a Quidco logo to tell you,

or do you search for the insurance company through Quidco, or…?

Is there a downside ?
