I have “PC Tools Spyware Doctor with Ativirus” programme installed on my computer, which seems to do its job OK. As all other company’s do, they are always trying to get you to buy more programmes. Up to now I have resisted their offers etc but, I have been reading about a programme they call " PC Tools Registry Mechanic" that is supposed to clean etc lots of programmes and other stuff on your computer to make it run faster. Being a bit of a numpty as regards computers can any computer whizkid tell me if this programme is worth having? Unfortunately the speed of the modems around the area where I live are about 2.1?? something or other which is quite slow as we are a long way from the 'phone exchange.
Hi
Whatever PC you have, it will not change the feed rate of your Internet connection, and thus will not affect the download speed. I would reccomend “Malware Bytes” anti malware and AVG FREE A/V software. I have worked in the I.T arena for 30 years and these would be my choice, with Zone Alarm running a close second to AVG. As for a registry cleaner, be very carefull here, the registry is the “nervous system” of your machine. You can do untold damage by poking around in there. Try a defrag followed by a scan with Malware bytes, this should speed you up a bit. Also have a look at what is starting up when you start your machine. You might want to stop some of these processes, this will also help.
I am also a bit of a ‘numpty’ as regards pooters so anything I say should be read with that in mind but I use a programme called ‘Regcure’ which would appear to do the same thing for me as the programme you are being offered would do for yours. It was described to me as a clean up operation, a bit like when you have finished doing some woodwork there are all the shavings to to clear up which would prevent you working neatly next time. Don’t ask me to explain how but it appears that ‘errors’ get left behind in the system and this programme identifies them, and then cleans them up. It certainly does seem to work.
After speaking to two friends of mine I decided to take the plunge and purchase the PC Tools Registry Mechanic on line. Being a numpty it took me a while to download it properly but I got there eventually. I have gone through all the Registry Cleaning options and now when I log on or click onto any web sites or even this website, the change in speed is amazing. Up to this minute I am quite impressed.
I’m with Gary on this, I used AVG free for as long as I’ve had home computers, my IT technician friends use it, and if it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for me
