I have the same problem, maybe with the weather lately it is unavoidable. I was thinking (before all this weather) about fitting some soundproofing to the bonnet and the boot lid. Anyone have an opinion on whether that would help or has done it. If so what did you use ?
That is rather a large amount of moisture - are you sure there are no leaks into the boot, from the roof, seals etc ?
I get rather less condensation than this with no leaks, so some is unavoidable I guess.
One option which might work is a dehumidifyer box from Halfords (£2.99) which a couple of us are using to control condensation inside the cabin, and would work just as well secured in the boot.
I would suggest you have a problem there of one sort or another. I can’t say that I’ve ever had condensation in my boot. Is there any water in the bottom of the boot?
You’re lucky then, my roadster boot lid has been running with water. If you sat outside for weeks, covered in snow and never get any heat in you, so would you…! My 5 thats is tucked up in the garage is OK, but there has been a load of condensation on the back of the garage door, and that drips on the car when door is opened…!
Very common in MKs1…but I suppose you can adopt the principals for a MK2 as well.
Avoid keeping compressed aircans in boot, they promote condensation.
The heat from the exhaust box penetrates into the boot, result as above.
As mentioned, there may be faulty boot seals, light seals, or a bung missing.
Partial remedy is to get a roll of house radiator styrene/foil, cut to exact shape of single skin boot metal, and adhere with silicon, shiny side visible Use the lugs to help secure. Take out the boot carpet and line underneath with same, using carpet reversed to cut accurately. Use two thicknesses on the boot floor., dry the carpet out indoors, and pop it on top. If the deep indent still has the carpet wadding in place and it seems damp, rip it out, clean all the crap out, chuck it in the bin and replace with cut poly carpet… NOT wool or cotton. Make sure the spare wheel has not gathered water through condensation too. Finally, get a food bag, put a cup of rice in it ( Basmati is yummy), and perforate the bag with a fork, pop it onto the spare wheel. If a Mk2…I guess the indent on the nearside of the boot is an ideal place. (Yes…rice.) Hope this helps.
PS…Mk2? While you are at it, I’d pop the bootlights out and check fore the infamous boot seam rot which were warranty issues. May as well flood some Dinitrol in. The light clips are very brittle.
Did you get your condensation problem sorted? I have only just noticed your post now after I (think) successfully dealt with the same issue on my 5, 1996 Mk1 1.8.
I had a leak from the roof which I thought was entering the boot and filling up the bottom of the boot, checked the rainrail, didn’t work, checked the drains still didin’t work. So I decided upon the eliminate everything it could be approach. I replaced the boot seal with a 2nd hand one and the rear light foam seals. It’s stopped the water coming into the boot and no more condensation in the boot. Even though the original boot seal looked OK to me.
I have got a new vinyl hood and am just waiting for couple of good days and time to summon up enough courage to tackle the job.
I have a Mk 3 that lives outside and have had exactly the same problem during the cold weather - it was driving me nuts! Everyday i was using a sponge to remove the moisture. The condensation was also freezing so had frozen droplets inside as well. I rang the dealer to see if there were any known problems, and they said that because it was a single skin, it was going to to be very susceptible to condensation in the weather we were having.
Aa soon as the freezing weather stopped it went away. Insulating the lid as someone suggested with radiator foil sounds a good idea which I’'ll rtry next winter
Rather than the dehumidifyer, buy a bag of dried rice or dried peas pop lots of pinholes int the pag and pop it in the boot perhaps with the spare wheel. That will tackle a good deal of condo
I tried a dehumidifyer box which made literally no difference, but since the sun has come out ive had no more problems so i guess it was due to the hard winter.
