Condensation

It’s that time of year again, I get into the car and the inside of the
screen is wet, I try and wipe screen dry for several minutes then notice
more wet on seats, look up, and the inside of the roof is covered in
water droplets more wiping and mopping follows before I can set off, bum
now damp urrgh.
Any advice as to how to cure this , I have tried cat litter in a small tray but no effect so far.
Can’t use garage as its full of junk and spare parts for car.

I bought some silica gel from eBay, but you really need to find the source of the dampness too. Mine was Because the rain rail had split, once this was sorted, the silica gel came into it’s own. I bought a couple of 2kg bags of the stuff and it did the trick.

This works wonders! I used it while I found the source of the moisture (split rain rail).

Agree with longdog, you have water entering the car somewhere. Finding and fixing it will sort your problem.

I spent a week in Devon recently and wet isn’t the word yet my MX5 remained dry inside.

Blocked roof drain tubes are the usual culprit…

I have no blockages and no leaks yet I have the same issue, very annoying. I have tried using one of those room dehumidifying things with some moisture absorbing granules in it. It certainly helps but problem not solved. I cannot find any leaks anywhere and have just put it down to the car just leaking damp air or rather a lack of airflow causes damp air to get trapped and condensate on the front screen. I have a hard top fitted at the moment which doesn’t use the rain rail to drain, the door seals do not leak and the screen doesn’t leak. No idea!

My situation is less bad, usually just a wet screen and a little moisture on the inside of the roof. Chairs remain relatively dry.

I bought my car for a bit of cheap fun, and can’t bring myself to spend £300 on a new hood… so my solution was a half car cover for £40

My MX-5 is a second car, and I’m only really interested in driving it with the roof down (when it’s dry), so for me this is cheap solution to the leaky hood problem.

Waving hi, as you’ve just said,I changed the roof and rail when i got mine because of wet boot and rear shelf, cured it all apart from the annoying, irregular drips while parked up in the garden, i got a half cover, brilliant bit of kit,2 min job to remove and put back on, windows etc are dry when i get in, keeps the frost off the windows and the vinyl, i’ve no garage so this is the next best thing.

Rain rail, drainage trays/tubes,weather seal round 1/4 light where it meets the windscreen piller at the top, roof sealls at the side not set correct, plastic nipple on the roof latch is missing so not making a good seal, weather strips on the out side of the door are old and dry so water is getting past the membrane(plastic is ripped or the black nasty suff is not making a seal?) behind the door card and into the roadster, same with the speaker, grommets on the bulk head, rear light seal gone and so on.

If under the carpet is wet on the passenger side ,then i would sort it sooner than leter because that is where your ECU lives ,and you do not want to get that wet, either way i would find it before the weather get worse, damp and mold having a party will not be nice for when summer hits.

Your best bet is to remove the back deck carpet and lift the footwell carpets ,get a kind bod to sit inside and use a hose pipe on sprinkle not jet.and find it that way, i am heading for the rain rail, do you get water in the boot also?

Is it not purley condensation with these frosty mornings. Our garage has quite a few cars of all makes and models and all the windscreens are wet through with condensation, some even drip onto the dash. Mind you the MX5 is well known for the odd leak !

Cleaned out the rain rail checked the tubes and all of the rubber seals, slightly better but still getting wet windscreen after standing even after a 10 min drive to supermarket, I have the feeling that any hint of dampness in the car will cause fogging up of the insides, so maybe I will just have to put up with it and carry loads of towels!!

Just a thought - have you got the heater control set to ‘recirculate’ or to draw air in from outside ? I found it makes a difference having it set to draw air in on my car from the point of view of condensation.
