Connecting Std Speakers to a set tweeter,s - bass unit advice - location

Hi All -

I have a set of door panels I’m about to fit into my MK1 , they have tweeters built into them with a couple of wires hanging of the back of them - how do I connect to the std door speakers ?

Do I need a cross over unit prior to both speakers with one feed to the old speaker , bass n midrange and one to the tweeter for the high end notes …?

Or just solder the wires to the back of the existing speakers and enjoy what ever noise comes out -

Also the CD player seems to have a bass unit output … Is their a discrete bass unit on the market I could use , what is the best location for this -  Not after big sounds , boom box stuff …more something tucked away that improves the sound a little -

With thanks

Hi Andrew,

You can put a sub in the boot, but I personally think all it will do is rattle the boot lid. If you have a couple of inches behind either of the seats this works well.

I have one in my mark 2 and it gives a nice sound and a little back massage as you drive. With this you can turn down the bass on the door speakers to get more mid and highs and the bass through the sub with integrated amp for a good all round sound.

I think with separate tweeters you will need to put in a cross over or they will blow quickly. But that all depends on the tweeters and stereo specifications. I almost would not bother and concentrate on good quality door speakers and sub rather then mess around with cross overs. But that’s just my opinion.

Thanks Ian - Appreciated

The sub certainly look like the type of thing I’m looking out for … !!

I’ll think on re the tweeters Vs door upgrade , but certainly sounds like  a good plan -

Thanks again

Have a look at the tweeters if they have a small capacitor connected to one of the terminals then they can be connected directly to the speakers in the doors just make sure you get the polarity correct if they don’t have capacitors then you will need a crossover
