Hi,
I own a 2008 mx5 which I bought new. Last June I had a minor stroke, and although now very healthy and medically fit to drive, the stroke has left me with a weakness in my left arm and hand. I am getting a spinner to make steering easier, but although I can manage to change gear I would feel safer and more comfortable with an automatic transmission. I don’t want to invest in a new powershift yet due to funds, but would like to be able to get my mazda converted to automatic. I know it can be done as I have seen one for sale that had been converted. It was a 2001 reg. I would really appreciate it if anyone could offer advice. I live in Cheshunt, Herts. Kathy
You’d have to find an automatic donor car to start with and to find one from 2008 could be a struggle as it’d have to be an import as the powershift didn’t appear on UK cars until facelift in 2009. It would then be a case of swapping all the automatic components across. it really isn’t the sort of project to be undertaken lightly. In all honesty, I think you’d be better just finding a powershift.
Hi Robbie, thanks for your reply. It sounds as bad as major heart surgery! I am having a steering wheel spinner and indicator extension which is very simple and fits all models and makes of cars. This may be enough for me to be able to drive my car as I can change gear and release the hand break. I will look out for a second hand powershift. It’s horrible not being able to drive my mazda, so hope the spinner resolves the problem.
Sorry to hear about your health problems Kathy. It’s encouraging to know you’ve substantially recovered but the remaining weakness must still be a real drag.
As Robbie says, it’s probably simpler, quicker and more economical to look for an automatic as close to the age/spec of your current car as you can find. It’s possible to convert a manual to automatic but it’d be easier with older models as there are more donor cars around being broken for parts. Even then it’s probably uneconomical compared to just trading cars so you’d likely only do it out of sentimental attachment to a particular car.
Best wishes for your continued recovery.
Thank you Martin. I may be fine with the spinner as it seems to be holding the steering wheel with both hands I have problems with. Luckily my stroke was minor and no underlying health problems. One of the worst things is I can’t touch type at the moment, so only using one hand lol. Will definitely look for a used powershift!
