Coolant Change Specifications

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ NC1, 2.0
  2. I’m based near: __Norwich
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __

I’ve recently noticed my thermostat is faulty, reading cold all the time making the car use more fuel.

I’m going to do a full coolant flush at the same time, can anyone tell me how much coolant the car takes?

Also I cant find a guide for the NC1 if there’s any available that would be great

Thanks

Jon

You need FL22 coolant, 2 x 5 litre containers, capacities in the link below.

Thermostat wise there are a few on offer, last time I looked from around £20 upwards, the genuine Mazda thermostats are quite pricey from Mx5parts.

If you search the forum using the search function using something like NC thermostat change it’ll give you an idea what’s involved.
The thermostat is housed under the intake side of the engine, associated hoses and throttle body needs removing to gain access. Flush the system out with deionised water before filling with fresh coolant👍

Awesome thanks for the info

So I take it the coolant capacity is 6 litres?

You will need to check if you have a LONG or SHORT thermostat fitted.

OR - just order a LONG one and if yours is a short one - cut the hose back a bit to fit it.

Probably more than 6 litres, it depends how much you extract from the system when flushed.
Link below, I’d probably buy this one for the stat. As above advice, if the neck is long on the stat, trim the hose about 30mm (large one) on the car for a snug fit. That’s how I fitted mine.

You may want to have a look at Ravenol which is a concentrate and is fully compatible. With this you can add sufficent to maintain the coolant strength without worrying how much of the flushing water or indeed the original coolant remains in the system. Dont forget that there is a bleeding procedure once the system is filled. A quick search on this site should pull up an excellent post of what you need to do.

Don’t waste your time flushing it unless you’ve found a genuine reason to do so.

After doing alot of research I’ve gone for

8L of Prestone £35.38
Napa Thermostat £17.82
Hose Clamp Pliers £6.99
Bent long Nose Pliers £6.95
A Bleed none spill kit £10.83

Total £78.97

The tools should make life easier

If anyone has a Tesco club card, they’re doing 4L of the Prestone antifreeze for £10.50 until the middle of August.
