Coolant leak - unsure where it is from

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __ mx5 mk1
  2. I’m based near: __ Birmingham
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: where the coolant leak is, it’s seems to be just behind the belts. I have went under the car and this is the clearest picture I could take. I have circled it black where it is dripping from.

Not sure what it could exactly be? And what needs to be taken off to find the culprit

Your waterpump is probably on its last legs. As they wear out, a small pinhole is exposed and will leak to warn that it needs replacing.

Either take it to a garage to pressure test the car or buy a cheapy pump to test yourself.

That’s amazing! Where did you find this info?

Pretty much all water pumps have a weep hole. It’s for when the shaft seal lets coolent past it. to stop the coolent reaching the bearing, it leaks out a small hole. If coolent gets in the bearing, it may seize. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtTghk9ESDY

Thanks for that, I’ve spent most of my time on air-cooled stuff.

Could it potentially be the water inlet pipe? the 90 degree elbow joint which gets rusted and corroded I believe my water pump and cam belt were changed roughly 15k miles ago.
