Correct or wrong - MK1 calipers are the same for both 1.6 and 1.8?

Exactly as the topic says. I read somewhere that calipers on MK1 1.6 and 1.8 were the same. Is this true?

They are different… The slider pins are at different ends…

Cannot be interchanged either as bleed nipple ends up wrong way up and the flexi-hose wont reach.

Thumbs up

Happy now Mr bling?

OK, The 1.6 and 1.8 front callipers ARE different, But I read somewhere that as a brake upgrade you can use use 1.6 callipers with 1.8 disc’s if you also used 1.8 hangers on the wrong sides (Ie, Passenger side hanger on the drivers side upright and vice versa), So surely you COULD use 1.8 callipers on 1.6 disc’s of you switched both 1.6 front hangers from left to right and right to left?

This could be way off the mark and it’s purely theoretical, But it should work shouldn’t it?

On the other hand, Just because you can do something, Doesn’t mean you should. If it was this simple, I’m sure Mazda would have just redesigned the hangers when they enlarged the MK1’s brake disc’s

CORRECTED:

The caliper brackets (hangers) are different on a 1.8, they are bigger.

Scotty B is CORRECT that you could use 1.8 calipers on a 1.6 by switching the hangers / brackets - Sorry I miss read that Scotty B…

However if you use 1.8 caliper brackets (hangers) switching the brackets (right to left and visa versa as suggested) MIGHT work. But they’d need to be 1.8 brackets. Then you may be able to use the 1.6 calipers with the bleed nipples in the right place.

I’m using 1.6 calipers on 1.8 discs using the 1.8 hangers swapped left to right - so the bleed nipple is at the top where it should be.

However, I only mucked about like this because I converted my 1.6 to 1.8 brakes - if i wasn’t converting it I’d just use the right caliper for my car.

The larger diameter pin should be designed to take most of the force, but on the 1.6 the larger pin is in the “trailing” position. It’s the sort of thing you can live with if it lets you use brakes out of the corporate parts bin. I assume when Mazda increased the disc size for the 1.8 they re-engineered the pin locations so the big pin was “leading” because that’s the way you should do it (or they changed it so they couldn’t fit the wrong brakes to the wrong car - I’m not sure if the 1.8 and 1.6 spec brakes were going down the same line at the same time).
