Having an absolute nightmare Tried to tackle front bumper (First mistake) with a mate by filling and respraying.
Having finally getting the thing smooth and all dry marks from the Primer filled, the bumper was ready for paint. I’ve since painted it and it’s just simply not the right match to the rest of the car (A Shade lighter). The paint used was a two course Paint / Lacquer. I was told that paint ins’t great and tried to spray a coat of separate lacquer afterwards, which has made the finish even bloody worse
I’ve accepted I now need to start over again and get the bumper sprayed by someone who knows what there doing.
Does anyone know the exact paint to use for a Mk one Vspec (I got my paint mixed up using the HU British Racing Green / Neo Green) code.
Secondly, does anyone know a reasonably priced body shop in the West midlands area that can do the respray? Gutted is an understatement as the car is off the road now.
The code is simply HU for the “flat” non Neo Green
I’ve heard of professionals making the same mistake over the years.
I’ve just had mine done professionally and it turned out OK but not perfect thanks to silicon contamination sucked in from an undertaker’s coffin workshop adjacent…so it’ll be getting done again here and there at their expense.
It looks OK from 15 feet or 70mph…
It’ll be fine in the right hands IF…they apply the clear coat properly but prep, prep, and more prep is the key.
From the image it looks pretty good. What’s annoyed me is I probably could of lived with mine image below is the colour difference, but now Ive spray can lacquered it, Ive made it bloody worse. Its all grainy and has no shine at all. I’m pondering whether to let it set and try and wet and dry with 2500 grit and rubbing compound over the weekend, then try dark green polish
Either that or admit defeat and get a professional to respray it again at an inflated price. Anyone know whether you can rub shitty lacquer off without damaging the paint?
It needs to go back to the plastic tbh & start again. By a pro. No offence.
Sounds to me you’ve got airborne contamination going on too.
Usually around £150-ish per bumper does it if base & lacquer rather than water-based cheap 2 pack is involved.
You may as well just accept these things are not your genius…I know for sure it ain’t mine.
Also, I notice you are looking to buy bumpers…but beware…you won’t know if they have been painted before and getting them since they are so whippy & delicate off the car delivered will be tricky…and how good are they really under close examination.
My final advice here is to bite the bullet and get a paintshop to deal with what you have.
Ha ha not quite. Though I did get it another go last night. Wet and Dried with 1500 the old shitty Halfrauds stuff and re applied with a half decent 2K Clear coat I bought from a paint shop. So i’m kind of back to where I was before hand as the the first coat of lacquer has come out quite well. Though as you can see, its more Neo than BRG. Plan is to re Lacquer leave for 4 days to set then use a very dark polish and that will have to be that for now .
I’ll put up some pics once its fully back on the car. But yes, Body work is not my thing. Accepted that now
