Corroded power steering pipe - advice please

 Hi everyone

Just a quick query - i’m concerned with the condition of one of the power steering pipes as per the photo. The pipe isn’t leaking but it doesn’t look the best. Is it possible to rub the pipe down, rust proof it and paint it with something like hammerite? Could it be an MOT advisory / failure?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks Jason

They are fairly thin from new Jason, I would advise relpacing both of those pipes (Mazda dealer Sad), it is usually the other end of the lesser crusty pipe which begins leaking where it joins the rubber hose on the return to the reservoir. That is the worst I have ever seen, are you running the car without the front under-tray fitted?

Thanks for the reply, i dont think i’ll mess with them if they are thin. I took the under tray and wheel arch liners off to gain access to the under side and check the chassis rails, wheel arches etc. The pipes looked bad from above but look worse from underneath! Thats going to hurt the old pocket at the dealers - any idea how much Dr. Eunos?

I have had them from both FRF Bridgend and Victoria Park Mazda in Cardiff, with wildly different prices for the same item £70 in one and £27 in the other Rolling eyes

You will find a pool of red hydraulic fluid on your drive when they start leaking, so worth replacing, I did try to get some return pipes made-up locally but struggled to find anyone local to make them up.

It is one of the relatively rare service items on an MX-5 that fail regularly if it is any consolation?

The car is off the road for the winter so I have some time to look into it and ring around for the best price. Thank you for a your advice, much appreciated.

In that case Taff, you should have seen the rubbish I took off mine, you’d have passed out!!!

Wish I’d taken pics now, these look salvageable to me with some resto work Thumbs up

Maybe I’ll give them a light rub over with some wire wool and see how they come up first.
