Cowl grommet

  1. My model of MX-5 is: 2009prh
  2. I’m based near: __stockport
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __leacking grommet
has anyone used gorrilla glue to fit the grommet, on the basis that it is waterproof and expands
    cheers peter

Hmm, the glue is not so important as much as how clean the surfaces are before working in the new sealant. Nothing will stick to the prime contaminant in that place, a mud which is diluted with polishing wax and traces of diesel and salt.

Appropriate sealants are usually such as silicone bath sealer, anything designed for continual immersion and yet allowing some flexing.

Silicone sealant every time.

Go for a small tube of clear with a screw cap if you can get it - much easier to handle and less messy

Fernox lsx leak sealer £5.19 from screwfix and around the same from toolstation. Resealable toothpaste like tube.

Mine were done in a hurry with a storm moving in and I used a gutter sealant as I didn’t have a specific silicone sealant to hand. I gave the area a good cleaning with IPA first and it stuck well.

Sikaflex EBT from £6.99 Screwfix; combined flexible sealant and adhesive. Just make sure the surfaces are clean and dry. We used to use Sikaflex to join GRP train cabs to the body structure.

Sikaflex would certainly do the job.
A bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut though.

True but when the best product is not much more than the rest, use the best. Plus ordinary mastic will eventually age and peel off.

Used Fernox lsx on the set I changed two days ago (as a secondary seal on top of the new parts used). I also did the same on two other sets i did in the last 12 months. I expect to see no leaks ever now

I hope you’re right but a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
If you used a new foam gasket, you will have introduced a weak link.
Much better imho to use a sealant as the primary and only seal.

I agree the foam gasket adds nothing. If you get the sealer in around the lip and aperture and give it plenty of time to set before reassembly.
A nice to have would also be slight upward pressure on the grommet while setting to simulate the pull of the reassembled scuttle panel.
