Crankshaft locking tool

I’ve seen a tool advertised in the States for locking the mx5 crankshaft, but can’t find one for sale here.  Has anyone seen one advertised somewhere? I think I can buy one for about £18 including postage from the States, so might do that at at a push. Could probably sell it for a tenner when I’ve finished , but sods law if I did I’d need it again later.

cheers,

iddy

 Thanks Wayne,

I’ll show them to my welding pal.

Recently made one out of 1 metre length of 25mmx6mm flat steel, and made a template, so that I could bolt it on, with a cut out to go around the shaft… cost - £6ish from B&Q! Gotta love diy…

Just copy the washer that is held on with 4x 10 mm head bolts out of thicker steel, not forgetting to also make sure you put the guide pin hole in and weld or bend a arm on so it can lock up on the sway bar both ways for unlocking and locking the crank shaft 21mm bolt back up, this is good upto the last 2.5 model 2005.

NOTE:- you do not need to do this with the Short nose crank engines, unless you are replacing the front oil seal, to which if you do, a new wudruff key and crank shaft bolt needs to be used without question, and the torquing up is different to the later engine, you will only need to remove the 4 x 10 mm bolts to do a cam belt or water pump on the short nose crank engine.

Buy an inch and a half washer or in modern terms 38mm.  Agricultural machinery suppliers are a good bet.  Then as Mazda Mender says measure  the timing disk behind the crank pulley drill the holes, weld an arm to it and you have a crankshaft locking tool.
