Crankshaft wheel wobble

Hi everyone

My 5 is in terrific health after a recent tuneup that has left her the most potent she has ever been. But I’m helping someone else with a bit of a project on a very cheap (sub 1k!) 1992 Eunos in need of some TLC. Many of the problems it had are well on-their-way to being fixed or already sorted, but there is one we need some advice on.

With the bonnet open, you can clearly see the crankshaft pulley wheel ‘wobbling’ as it turns. It still drives the belt happily enough and is not too noisy (even my car has some noise from there), but the wobble is dividing opinions here. A workmate reckons it may be a sign of serious engine damage, but I have heard whisperings on other threads and forums that these wheels do wobble after a while and it’s more of a mounting issue. Something to do with harmonic balancing?

If anyone is able to offer advice and/or assurance here, it would be massively appreciated.

Many thanks

Simon

Have a look in the FAQ index, http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/7340.aspx and check out the Engine section. There is some good stuff about identifying crank pulley problems. It must be said that a '92 car will probably have the longer nosed crank, but these have been known to fail. Let’s know how you get on—
