Creak when braking at low speed

Recently my brakes have started screeching sometimes when slowing as I approach junctions/lights, not always it depends on how hard I am applying the brake pedal. Additionally I have noticed a creaking sound when braking at very low speeds, such as when parking, usually whilst I am turning/braking, sometimes followed by a quiet clunk as I come to a stop.

There are no untoward noises when driving normally or when going over bumpy uneven roads, so I don’t think the sound is related to the the suspension. Is this maybe an indication I need to change my pads, or could it be something else?

Passed an MOT with no advisories in Feb and I do limited mileage - although a previous MOT a few years ago failed on a sticking caliper which was replaced, not sure if relevant but thought I’d mention it

Could be several things that create those sorts of noises.

Firstly, the possibility that your brake pads are worn out. On many cars the brake pads have an insert that rubs and squeals on the brake disc when the friction lining is worn out. This is deliberate to let you know the pads need replacing.

It could also be because there is a piece of gravel trapped between the brake dust shield and the brake disc itself. This can make a horrible squealing/grinding noise dependent on how fast you are going, whether you are turning or if you are applying the brakes.

Lastly it could be that the spring clip that holds the brake pad in position has stopped working correctly or has fallen out.

I would just take the car to a garage and have them take a quick look if you don’t feel up to looking yourself.

I’ve an nb which does exactly the same thing. Brand new brakes all round and everything looks ok. Have stripped and checked a couple of times in case of ball joint going tight or similar but everything looks good. Brakes operate perfectly.
Have put it down to imperfections of metal on disc or funky friction material on pad and stopped worrying about it. It is annoying though. I do a lot of miles in mine so expect I’ll have to change front discs and pads fairly soon anyway.
