Creaking (not squealing) under braking

Recently I’ve noticed a creaking noise under light, slow braking. … There is also no noise when slowing down at low speeds without braking. This always happens after I’ve driven the car for 15-20 mins or more. It’s just like the noise a hand break cable makes under strain, although the hand break is not engaged at all, it’s 100% coming from the left rear calliper even when I lightly step on the foot break.

I’m thinking either a piston is corroded or my pads are moving or is there another cable I’m not thinking of?! It is a reconditioned calliper which I had fitted in December 2019.

Any ideas, thoughts? Anyone had this before?
Thx

Creaking is certainly not unheard of but still not the best of signs. Excluding the disc spinning there’s a few moving parts down there, the pads move inside the housing, the housing itself moves, the retaining clips are budged by the pads and the piston moves in and out. Any of these could be causing a creaking noise. It’s a pretty simple fix for a person with some spanners, unbolt the caliper and give everything a good wash with soapy water, rinse well, dry and then grease the moving parts with rubber grease or copperslip depending on your preference. Obviously check things over while you are down there

Wow, that was a quick response, thank you! That all makes perfect sense and I think I will order a kit from MX5P (new seals & grease) as a precaution in case anything needs replacing. I’ll have a look over the weekend and let you know what I find. Thanks again

Yep, what BBB said. Take apart methodically - you know that the pads need backing off with the hidden allen screw, right? Clean, lubricate as necessary, and methodically reassemble and readjust, and the chances are that you’ll have lost the creaking.

Strip the caliper off and then remove the caliper carrier, clean and inspect the carrier very carefully as it could be cracked.

Hi H1S,

Yes, thank you I do, I’ve watched hours of YouTube and have maintenance manuals on order but appreciate the reminder. I’m waiting on quite a few other parts and tools as want to get the job done correctly and methodically as you suggest so not sure if it will be completed this weekend. I will certainly report back with a few pics and comments. Appreciate your advice, thank you.
