Cup Holder and Ashtray Loose - How Do I Fix?

Both the lid on my Cup Holder and Ashtray are loose, I have a feeling that the spring/coils have come out, but how do I fix this, do I need to take the centre piece out? If so how? Any help here is appreciated.

2002 - Facelift version so Mk2.5

Its probably the spring that has come off, you need to take the centre console out.

Guessed so, how would I go about that?

Screws either side at the front of it, then some inside the lid. You will need to unscrew the gearknob. Once the console is out it will be clear what the problem is…hopefully.

You have to pop out the window switch to get at one of the bolts.

I had the same problem on mine and managed to anchor the spring mechanism with bit of a (hidden) lash up. Easy enough once the centre unit is out of the car.

I have now done it, two screws front end, two back and one under window buttons. Sorted for now but the actual black catches have broken on both. So might be temperamental for now, but sorted nonetheless.
