I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Custom built door cards
Hi folks,
Has anyone created their own door cards?
I drive an NB. I am dabbling with the idea of trying to create a more old fashioned/simpler door card for my car, not dissimilar to the NA, so was hoping to find some expertise on how to do it.
I no longer have any ICE fitted so don’t need the larger speaker grilles anymore.
I quite like the idea of doing away with the armrest/door pull handle and replacing it, perhaps with a loop of leather or a separate chrome handle.
Ideally I will trim it in leather and introduce a design/texture to break up the large, flat plain.
I’m watching a YouTube channel where the creator has just fashioned door cards for an old Alfa Romeo so that provided some inspiration. Now I need to discover a way of doing that for the NB.
That looks delightful.
I’m not sure whether I have the skill to recreate something so elegant but it’s inspirational nevertheless. Thanks for sharing the idea.
By coincidence I’m also considering switching from black to a red.
Google Nb Miata flat doorcard. There are some ready made solutions. But first, you need a pair of NB doorcards you are prepared to sacrifice
The details like grab handles are down to personal choice. Suppliers of briefcase handles are a good source of leather handles with brass or stainless steel fittings.
I recovered NA doorcards using Martrim heat stretchy leatherette. Write up here:
Brillant stuff ast, thank you so much.
I disovered that my good ladie’s sewing machine ought to be able to cope with thinnish leather if I get the correct needle and thread. Now I need to find a swatch or two to practice on before I stump up for a cow.
Very much appreciate the help.
Cheers,
Guy
Interesting.
I would like to introduce some texture and design since the expanse is quite large.
Using a circle around the window winder seems a good idea but it’s odd that Mazda overlapped theirs with the speaker surround.
It might look ok to introduce a textured panel with parallel seams or even quilting.
Thanks for the inspiration.
This door card might be fairly horrendous/divisive, but it gives an idea of what happens if you try and get rid of the upper section of the factory card
Hmmm…perhaps not the most elegant solution I’ve ever seen.
Retaining the top most portion of the door card seems sensible as it maintains the line through the end of the dashboard and keeps a sense of coherence to my eyes.
I would like to somehow fill in the tweeter grille though.
A form of pocket might be useful so I’m wondering if I could fix a flexible leather pouch along the bottom of the card where the OE plastic door bin is now
Lots to consider.
Very much appreciate the continuing input and ideas. Thanks.
The Mazdaspeed knee brace I recovered with this Martrim stretchy vinyl; it softens with a hairdtyer, and you can get a flat bit of vinyl to follow complex curves. I had never retrimmed before,
I know you want t make your own but this might give you some ideas here - for example they seem to have used MK1 door tops with MK2 doors for some of their offerings, which looks neater to me. I’ve not used the cards so can’t recommend them first hand, but they were in a MK3 at an event and the ones I saw looked neat and well done.
