Custom Exhaust and Remap Query

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Mk3 1.8
  2. I’m based near: Cheshire
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Exhaust and Remap

So following various threads I have read, I have a great response back from Tony Banks today. Quoted me £499 for a cat back system designed with no drone and noise to the levels I require. I will be going with this option. It is a little more than off the shelf products but already it appears their service is going to be good and they come from another recommendation.

The have also offered the stage one remap at £179. I am not fussed about prices so dont need comments on that, I either accept it or not, but what I want to know is it worth it, will the car pass its MOT (of course I will need to advise my insurers), but what benefits will I get from the remap with no other work being done?

My current 0-60 is about 10 seconds (if it ever gets there lol).

Thanks.

Can’t really help you other than to say Tony Banks exhausts are great! I’ve used them several times over the years, including a quad exit manifold back system on my supercharged mk1. They really know there stuff IMO. They built me a new system for my LWB Pajero exceed back in the day with stacked 4 exit tails. Whisper quiet from the V6 petrol lump, was amazing.

Mine is a 2.0 Sport tech, but the principles are all the same.
I originally just had the cat back exhaust and was advised that a proper remap would give very minimal benefit. You say a stage 1 remap… not too sure exactly what is meant with that. My understanding (as have had it done) you have a proper remap done to suit the individual car to obtain the best BHP, Torque, drive ability, original engine safety features, what fuel grade is used and indeed save the original map etc as part of the upgrade.

I did find that the new exhaust did actually make the car drive better, looked better and sounded better with that fitted anyway. (Which is the whole point really). I did sell that box though as it droned and fitted the cobalt. For me the engine was “just more free revving”.
Others on here may have different opinions of course.
That passed the MOT with no problems, it’s all about emissions and so far no one has proved with evidence any differently.
Like you, I don’t want to get into other technical arguments about original equipment etc.
Just my opinion but save your money and leave well alone. You might get the bug of course and do other mods and I would then consider the remap at that point.

I then had a 4-1 manifold which was included in the Skuzzle Motor Sport Fast Road Package. That included a full remap and in my opinion transformed the car. Again my car passes the MOT every year.

Do what ever you wish to do, take good advice from those that have had work done and indeed professionals. Just enjoy while you can it’s all great fun at the end of the day. :+1: :slightly_smiling_face:

Stages are simply something invented over the years to satisfy the public. General rule of thumb is that stage 1 is a totally standard car with an exhaust remap. Stage 2 is exhaust/breathing modifications and a remap. Stage 3 would be internal mechanical works like head mods, bore or stroke changes, turbo swap etc and a remap.
What ever stage you are buying the map will be optimised to the cars mechanical set up. Each car has different requirements as you start tuning.

Remap with out manifold will only give you a better driving car i:e if you had a flat spot just as you go to pull away it gets rid of that very hard to say if you will notice any increase in power I had mine done just to see if the car drove better and it did all I had was a sports back box and stage 1 remap I guess unless you put it against a standard car you won’t know…is it worth doing …for me yes as did not want to go to the expense of manifold and remap and the car was a lot better to drive but if you are thinking of having a manifold then wait a lot of people will tell you just a remap and it goes faster but I belive its the placebo effect …once again stage one map just makes the car drive better it was worth it to me…

The go to people for a remap in Cheshire are Blink Motorsport for a reputable remap

With just the exhaust change a remap will not give very much in the way of power. Even a BBR full system on a 2.0 only nets 5 bhp over their Super 180 or 200 packages.
If the remap is generic with no rolling road session it may give improvements by removing the limiters in lower gears but I would ask what it changes and if it is mapped to suit just the exhaust change. Having brought a car with an open source remap which made power but was right on the limit of safe a/f ratio, it is always good to custom remap at a known mapper like Blink.

Cheers Richard, I will make some enquiries, noting their website answers the cost enquiries I would likely have but I think what they offer is above and beyond my requirements (at least at the moment until I sweet talk my wife hahaha).
