Cutouts, not starting and electrical issues

Hi everyone,

I have been having some serious difficulties with my MK3 MX5 (2006) and cut outs.

The car drives sweet, until every so often it cuts out for a split second and the radio loses power, all the lights on the dashboard go off for a split second, and then everything comes back on but with the DSC, ABS, TCS and handbrake lights all on. Then when I park up straight after, when I turn the car off, I hear a click and then lose all electrics. The LCD with mileage display turns off, and the needles all go up and down frantically and then eventually drop to the bottom.

At first I thought it was a battery issue, so I changed the battery. After a few weeks the issues returned. The boot had become wet from clogged drainholes, so I cleared that and dried the boot out which again, seemed to stop the problem. However, yesterday, I went out for lunch and parked it (not experiencing the usual blip of power loss and had no lights on the dash) and it clicked when I went to turn it on and then it completely lost electrics and couldn’t turn it on. The AA came and the guy said that the positive battery terminal was slowly losening because it was a poor nut/bolt set up, so he put in a self-tapping screw to hold it in place and tightened the nut on the terminal. It immediately started back up after he did that and was back to normal today.

Until now, it has just done the usual split second loss of electrics, followed by DSC, ABS, TCS and handbrake lights on, then once turned off, it clicked and the LCD mileage went off again along with the needles going up and down frantically. Luckily, it started up again but the DSC, ABS, TCS and handbrake lights were all still on and it’s back on the drive now.

Does anybody know of similar issues happening to them or does anybody know what the problem could be?

Thanks,

Adam

Without an obd2 diagnostic test and after making sure all the contacts are good to the battery, alternator, starter motor and earth straps I’d hazard it could be the main relay contacts, hence the clicking there is youtube assistance to help you locate it. Good luck,
