I am in the process of updating my audio system as it is now 15 years old. I obviously cannot have a roof aerial and don’t fancy having one in the windscreen. Has anyone ventured down the splitter route and just utilised their existing aerial? If so how good is the reception?
i loved my old system and will miss my mini discs, however I know my iPod classic will soon help me forget about them. Has anyone upgraded their system recently and perhaps have a recommendation?
If you need a splitter (check the radio’s for its connections) then use a proper splitter like one of these below to separate the two frequency bands, and it should work OK with the old aerial - if that is good condition and not amplified. The splitter is powered using the same pin on the back of the radio as would call for an electric aerial to lift. Also it is important to check if the aerial on the car has an amplifier built in, because these older mast pre-amps are carefully tuned to pass only the FM and AM bands and will probably block the higher frequency DAB band they are not designed for.
I helped a friend install one of these splitters last year in his old Focus. I forget which radio he bought (Pioneer maybe?) but it had two sockets (normal for FM and SMB for the DAB) and he was happy with the results. He mentioned that some other radios have the split inside and can make do with one aerial input, but he wanted the facilities this one offered and also the option for a separate DAB antenna in case the existing aerial was not good enough.
