The term comes from Ticker tapes and early typewriters. in fact I just threw a ticker tape daisy wheel away a few weeks back - a relic from my distant youth while working as a ticker tape mechanic. Pity - could have shown a photo of it. It’s a small metal wheel, with spokes holding a perimeter rim on which a type face is embossed, an ink roller keeps it inked while the machine rotates the wheel and punches out the right type as it’s sent from a transmitter. Granted, a real wheel probably looks like a daisy, but the term dates back many years. IIRC - early printers were also called daisy wheel printers, I started with an Epson quite a few years back. Different format, but the principle was the same. Later on the design was improved, only to be replaced by the ink jet and (for those that can afford it) the laser printer.

One of those "“Not a lorra people know that” terms!

Ah memories, wasn’t the daisy wheel, if not replaced by but about the same time as the golf ball printer / typewriter.
I know, I’m showing my age (-:

Replaced by - I couldn’t remember the name! Improved speed and design, so they claimed. The Epson lasted several years, printed on a roll, or separate sheets, very handy for read-outs. Both noisier than inkjets, which destroyed the market for old technology - as it does every other day. Daisies were cheaper to run - you just bought type ribbons similar to typewriters. Inkjets are like Barbie Dolls (the new way of marketing) you have to keep buying cartridges which are always too expensive. I recommend Printer Inks, worth a look.

this is a daisy

this is a daisy wheel

I assumed the wheels were named after the flower rather then the bit from a printer as the spokes are sort of daisy petal shaped… but who knows…

This is a cow called Daisy

Is it standing on roller skates then??? (with daisy’s wheels?) I’ll get my coat - - -
