Dampness and mould on roof

Hello guys,
Hope you are all well and getting ready for the festive season.
My mk1 mx5 seems to enjoy steaming up and also growing mould looking spots on the inside of the roof, I assume these are due to the damp warm conditions in the car at this time of year.
What advice would you have to overcome these? Any helpful tips??

Thank you, kindly appreciated

Chad

Firstly, check that there are no leaks causing damp to get in the car as this will cause condensation at this time of year.

If it is just “normal” condensation from damp air and breathing inside the car etc, then the best way to minimise this is ventilation, open the windows when possible, or better still, if weather permits, drop the roof for a while to allow the warm moist air to escape.

I put one of those plastic damp trap in mine, this gets it nice and dry before I put the hard tops on. Both mine now have nice dry carpets ect.

Hi,

When the cars are parked on my drive, and the sun comes out, I crack open the soft top or wind the windows down to get some fresh dryer air into the cars. I find that this helps, but just a word of warning, keep an eye on the weather, or all your good work will be undone by a sudden rain shower.

Thanks guys

Is there anything I can put onto the inside of the roof to discourage the spors from growing?

Chad

just keep it clean with a good hood cleaner, try using a proofer on the outside that may help.

Any suggestions of a good cleaner to use from your experience?

For cleaning the hood outside I use the Autoglym hood cleaner, that’s for a mohair hood. For vinyl hoods they do a vinyl and rubber cleaner but a good scrub with soapy water will do. I once had a Mk2 with mould on the inside surface of the hood which I cleaned with a very small amount of bleach in water, a weak mixture. Be careful with it though and wipe off with soapy water and let dry

Yes I have used bleach, also white vinegar works well, mixed with water of course.

For the outside Renovo is very good.
