Dead battery but not dead battery!

Neighbour’s Nissan 4x4 wouldn’t start. Just the dull click of a dead battery. Meter across the terminals gave a mere 8V. Wouldn’t start with a freshly charged battery hooked up to + and earth.

Two days later, it started as normal. What’s going on?

I am.guessing that, if I’d disconnected the battery to take a voltage, it would have been enough to start the car - 12V or more.

What could cause a large drain, but only temporarily?

I know it’s not your car so possibly you won’t buy the below.
It checks conditions of battery, charging etc.
Of course do all the checking of terminal tightness and clean etc
I was to thinking starter motor, starting to fail, who knows?
My daily driver with a few more electrical stuff to go wrong than the MX-5 went into limp mode and stuck up an array of lights on the dash, two being throttle position sensor and traction control. Neither were faulty, it was a failing battery. Clear the codes and they came back, new battery sorted it all. The battery actually started the car no problem, apparently it wasn’t enough (power) for the other systems on the car to say they were happy to operate.
