Decapitated Door Mirror

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Series Three
  2. I’m based near: Oxford
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Door Mirror

Having yesterday thwacked a wheelie bin that had been left out in the road with my left hand door mirror it came out of the encounter hanging by the cable. The mirror itself is still intact, including miraculously the glass, but there appears to be some circular mounting bracket thing that the wire runs through which is broken. I’m not sure whether this is supposed to be in two halves, one half still attached to the mirror assembly and one still embedded in the door bracket or whether that is supposed to be a single part that is broken. Could someone please avail me of the parts break down of the components of the door mirror attachment and let me know whether these parts are available individually?

Many thanks

David.

I doubt you would be able to get the parts separately from my experience. Your best bet might be to get a second hand mirror off eBay. If the cover is intact you don’t need to worry if the one you buy is the same colour as you can transfer the cover over.

I have had to fit two second hand door mirrors to my daughters GT86 as she seems to have a habit of getting them knocked off!

It’s a complete unit unfortunately - around £150 for a new one including delivery

Been there, done that. Also on a wheelie bin, but a commercial one which had rolled out of its place on a very narrow lane. Fortunately the business involved agreed to pay for the mirror, and I fitted it myself.

As @MintyRox says, the only real solution is to replace the mirror (either new or, as @First_rider_off says second-hand). They do come ready painted when bought new.

I’ve read of a number of attempts to repair the mechanism when this has happened, but I think that all of them failed agin shortly afterwards and led to the mirror being replaced.

The shaft up the middle has probably broken.
I searched high and low, and couldn’t find one.
It’s possible to perform a repair with copper tube and epoxy, but I’ll be honest, it’s not the easiest of jobs. There’s a spring which is almost impossible to refit. You’d be as well off buying another mirror on eBay etc.
Unless you’re up for the challenge. I almost gave in trying to reassemble mine.

Commiserations……. I’ve knocked off 5 of my wing mirrors over the years, two on my last NC and three on Alfa 164s. It’s only a matter of time before I knock one off my ND. I had to buy new ones for the NC as could never locate a scrapper.
