I’ve just bought my first MX5 (a 1998 mk2) which I’m already in love with. I would like a mechanic to have a look over the car, to check if there’s anything that needs attention (not a full service). Do you know of any garages in Cambridge that would offer this kind of thing?

The car has a slight idle droop when the engine in cold in the morning, which seems to go away after a while. I’ve read on the forums that this is a pretty common problem, but can’t find a specific guide for an MK2. You think this is something worth looking at myself (given I know nothing about cars) or paying the £85+VAT for EMG garage to run a diagnostic?

I wouldn’t be paying money to a garage for a fault code read for an idle droop issue when cold just yet. I’d check the base idle first, either search that and do it yourself or see if the nice mechanic at EMG will do it when he does the Healthcheck, it’s literally a 1 minute job. You are able to check for fault codes yourself with an LED or multimeter and a paperclip, so again, I’d advise you do a bit of searching and have a go at that yourself rather than spend out £100 for no possibly no gain. If you really do no nothing about cars and are not the sort of person to have a go, then pop along to an Eastern meet and people will gladly talk you through stuff.
