Difference between a 2016 Icon or 2016 Sport Nav 1.5 ??

HI everyone,

I’m finally getting around to buying an MX5 and wondered if anyone can give me a few pointers.

I like the 2016 Limited edition icon (red &white) and also the Sport Nav 1.5l.

I was wondering what the difference is?

Do they have the same seats for example?

I’m guessing it’ll be the same engine / gearbox / brakes ect…

So are the only differences trim levels?

Any help people can give would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance

Best regards

I test drove an Icon a couple of weeks back (before abandoning MX5 ownership for an Audi TT)

Overall  I really liked the car but one thing killed the Icon for me above all else. It’s fitted with BBR exhausts. I don’t think the Sport has these. They make the most wonderful deep throaty roar under acceleration. At first I really enjoyed the noise but after about 10 minutes it started to grate. If you are planning to buy the car as an everyday runner I suspect the novelty might wear off pretty quickly. If on the other hand it’s just a weekend runner you may be able to live with it.  Even the Mazda salesman suggested the noise was a bit over the top so to speak

Definitley try before you buy!

I’d be pretty sure that exhaust was a non-standard modification, I assume it was a used example as the Icon came out in 2016.  The Icon brochure doesn’t mention a special exhaust.  Happy to be corrected if I’m wrong.

The Icon is very similar to the Arctic, apart from the aero bits and the graphics.

It’s based on the SE-L Nav with some of the bits from the Sport Nav added.

These are I believe, excluding the Soul Red aero parts and the graphics -

? Rear parking sensors
? Dusk-sensing lights
? Black leather seat trim
? Heated seats
? Rain-sensing front wipers

The 1.5 Sport Nav had all the above and in addition

? Adaptive Front lighting System

? Auto-dimming rear-view mirror

? Smart keyless entry
? Lane Departure Warning System
? Premium Bose® sound system with nine speakers
(incl. two driver and two passenger headrest speakers)

The dealer said the BBR exhausts were part of the Icon package because he’d gone and checked if they were specific to that car. Yes, it was a used model, on a 66 plate if memory serves me  correctly

I might just be digging myself a deeper hole here but AFAIK the Mazda approved noisy exhaust is a Bastuck.  Either way, it isn’t mentioned in the model brochure.

We need an Icon owner to confirm, I’m not a real expert.

John is correct, the exhaust is the same on all models so it must have been a retro fit.

Assuming a dealer knows anything of importance about these cars or tells the truth is becoming more and more of a rarity… now if you want the intimate detail of a PCP finance plan then that will be different!

The Mazda Parts System shows only one rear silencer parts number for all the UK supplied ND 1500 cars.

It appears the dealer you spoke to is not a friend of the truth.

Ex Mazda employee here (and still in love with the brand) i can confirm the Icon did not have an upgraded exhaust from factory so that must have been a first owner mod. Dealer was either blatantly lying or was incompetent!

As per the above the Icon was a modded SEL-Nav with the Sport Nav bits added to it. Biggest let down for me was the lack of Bose - otherwise I loved the look of it it just NEEDS the Bose!
