Sorned the MX-5 today, tucked up in the garage for the winter months. Isn’t it strange how a SORN takes effect immediately, yet you are not permitted to tax a vehicle from any date other than the 1st of the month? Sharp practice from the DVLA methinks. I did ask the DVLA some time ago why the discrepancy but received a mealy-mouthed response about administrative costs which was utterly unconvincing. It irritates me every year!
It was a clever, no cost “improvement” and no doubt resulted in someone getting promoted. Every time a car is bought or sold, other than right at the beginning of the month, they cream off the remaining tax and then “back tax” the new owner.
A bit like the winter fuel allowance. In the post this morning it says I’ll be given £100, paid into my account as usual.
But…
If my income before tax is over £35,000, then next year’s tax code is adjusted to repay the £100 from my next years income.
“Give with one hand and take away with the other.”
C’est normale.
Winter fuel allowance? I’ve just sorned my MX-5. Damn! Can I save it for next summer?
Watch you don’t get taxed on the extra income they must reclaim the £100.00/200 by the 26 jan 26 it a slight of hand by HMRC give you £100 take back over all £120… not bad give me 10 mins in a room with RR and I get her to count properly she have no fingers left…..![]()
No politics remember…
Just run that maths by me, they give you £100 and then adjust your notice of coding so you pay £100 more tax, where is this £20 coming from?

You should have Opted Out of the payment when you had the opportunity. Then there would have been no tax to pay as you would not have received the “Allowance”….,
Never had a chance to opt out.
As never believed I would get it because of the 35K threshold. The deadline has passed, but know for next time.
They are giving me £200 which will be recovered back in tax payments” over the oncoming tax year.
Just a complete pointless exercise as HMRC knows exactly how much income I have.
My understanding is, if your total income is over £35,000 there will be no difference in your nett ‘income’ whether you take the benefit now or tell the government that you do not want it.

My understanding is that once you sorn it takes effect from the day you do it and any searches will show as ‘not taxed’. I would not drive the car once you have sorned without checking with DVLA.

I too have SORN’d a couple of my toys. My cherished MX-5 NC was prepped and bagged for the Winter during the middle of September. My Westfield, needing some further engineering work, was SORN’d for the end of October. I took fair weather opportunities to drive both of them until the end of their respective months. I reason that I have paid until that date and would argue that point in Court should I be challenged or prosecuted. Otherwise, DVLA are engaging in theft by deception. As a matter of interest, I always tax them for 12 months as the short term VED is proportionally higher. It also gives me flexibility in chosing the month in which they are mothballed.
correct, SORN is SORN. Mine is being SORN for atleast 12 months from the end of April.
DVLA web site says:
When a SORN starts and ends
Your SORN will start immediately if either:
-
your vehicle tax has expired
-
you’re not applying in the month your vehicle tax is due to expire
Your SORN will start on the first day of the next month if you apply in the month your vehicle tax is due to expire.
Thank you for that information. So, if I am interpreting this correctly:
Vehicle was taxed for 12 months from April 1st 2025. I declared SORN on 30th October so therefore SORN is effective immediately because it wasn’t the last month before it was due to expire.
If I declared SORN any date in March 2026, the SORN would come into effect from April 1 2026.
