Different steering wheel and MOT ?

Hi

Will I pass an MOT if don’t have oem steering wheel ?

I’m thinking of changing my steering wheel on something sporty with no airbag.

Will I ?

It depends on the age of your vehicle.
If your OEM wheel had an airbag, then your new one will need one too to pass MOT.
That’smy understanding, anyway…

It needs an airbag to pass the MOT.

The only way: change the steering wheel before MOT.

That would invalidate your insurance as an undeclared modification. Apart from that, the airbag could save your life.

Have a look at the MOT testers manual: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/518634/mot-inspection-manual-for-class-3-4-5-and-7-vehicles.pdf

Section 5, Supplementary restraint systems, says ‘As far as practicable, check that all airbags fitted as original equipment are present and not obviously defective’.  Under ‘reasons for rejection’ item 1 is: An airbag obviously missing or defective.

On that basis removing the original equipment driver’s airbag is definitely an MOT fail.

I would definitely fail it on the Mot.Also ,with the airbag not installed, the warning light will be on permanently, another defo fail.

I have a friend who is currently working on making sports steering wheels for more modern cars.  At the moment he makes them for Mk1, Morgan’s, Jaguars etc…
