Differential grinding noise - repairable or new LSD?

Hi,

Just taken my car to the garage, was hoping it was a grinding noise from my rear wheel bearing but alas it’s the LSD.

Grinding/rubbing is probably the gears right? Which I would assume is not repairable.

Can I refurbish an LSD or do I need to bite the bullet and spend £450 on a second hand LSD from fleabay.

Pretty annoying, as I think LSD’s are one of the most expensive second hand parts!

Thanks all,

Freddie

what car?

have you had the oil level checked? if it’s an NA,NB(maybe NC?) is the ppf alignment correct? are the diff mounts doomed as they can transmit mecanical noise to the body?

I’ve just built a ‘7"’ diff for my Eunos, bearings cost £90 with about £30 in oilseals - that’s presuming you have suitable tools like bearing pullers, hydraulic press & measuring equipment and know how to carry out the work?

also, it’s possible to fit your lsd into a cheaper ‘open’ diff unit (needs a few tools) but that’s presuming your lsd is not worn or damaged?

Rich.

It might just be very low on oil.

Mine sounded awful very quickly after a Dealer oil change where the OLD crush washer was used on the filler, allowing it to leak badly; the pong from dripping on the exhaust was chronic.  Topped up and new washer and no longer leaking it is back to normal.

My Fuiji Special LSD in the recently imported Mk1 was chattering on slow tight turns. As a recent import the oil in the diff was unknown.

Was advised to change the oil to Castrol B373 racing lsd oil and also adding Red Line Friction Modifier.

What a change in it’s performance, the chatter has gone completely. I was almost taking the diff out and throwing it away but after the sprint day at Curborough it behaved perfectly.

Worth a try !!!

The Fuji LSD diff in my 2005 Mk2.5 rattled and banged even after an oil change.

Think it had too many MOT’s on a rolling road!

Took it out and replaced with a Torsen type 2 4:1 LSD…what a DIFFerence!!
