differential noise

ive been driving my mk1 mx5 for about 2 months now and there is a bearinbg noise coming from the diff.

i looked underneath and felt the left driveshaft coming out of the diff was a bit sloppy!

can i change the bearing easily enough? or do i need a complete new diff??

basically because there is a huge price difference!!

You’ve got to strip the diff to change the bearing, not a job to be undertaken lightly. I think as you’re asking the question, you’d be better off getting a used diff and fitting the entire unit. are you sure that the diff is the problem? A sloppy driveshaft isn’t usually a symptom of a failed diff bearing, unless you’ve got a really serious issue with it.

i can sell you a good, used open diff from a 1994 1.8 for £50 if you can collect it from Ely (Cambridgeshire).

Hi Robbie - I have the same problem as Mike 121 on my recently purchased Eunos 1996 1.8. There’s also a diff oil leak. Should I just change the seals or check whether there is a bearing problem? Any suggestion as to the best place to do that near King’s Lynn? Took the car in to EMG but they are quoting £82 just to have a look! Thanks much

I can’t recommend a garage I’m afraid but I’d suspect just a failed seal rather than anything more sinister. it’s worth checking thepat the breather is not blocked first as if it is that may be causing oil to force it’s way out of the seal. The breather is a rounded topped small thing just to the left of centre of the diff at the top of the rear cover. The top part should be free to rotate around it’s casing. The whole breather assembly does unscrew for a more thorough inspection.

Many thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
