So I know this has been asked tons of times before but I never had to pay attention to the replies before and now I can’t work out how to search to find the old posts, so I’ll just ask again!
Is there a relatively easy way to install a switch to disable the passenger airbag on my wife’s mk2 1.6?
Is the insurance company going to complain and charge extra if we do disable it? I assume we have to tell them if we do.
I’d rather not disable it all the time, just when the child seat is in place.
have a look here
Thanks, but thats more about a mk2.5 with the transponder than a mk2.
I have heard that the mk2 in the US came with a switch you stuck the key in to disable the airbag. Now I know the mk3 has one of these, but is it true the US mk2 miata did too?
If so could one be retrofitted to a UK mk2 ?
Yes the mk2 Miata had a switch in the center console to disable the passenger air bag and yes in theory it could be fitted to a UK car but I would not like to say what implications this may have.
Generally speaking, the switches are not very hard to retrofit (to other cars), but unless it is an offical Mazda upgrade, then no dealer will touch it, and you will be hard pushed to find a local garage who would either, since the impllications of it going wrong are so high (and it cannot really be tested).
Your best bet is probably to go down to your local franchise dealer/specialist mechanic and ask some questions.
Mercedes (ASKE system) baby seats should disable the airbag in a mark 2 MX-5. I’ve tried one and it did.
I am going to pick up an as-new one up tomorrow.
I was told by Mazda UK that Britax had chosen to stop selling them
the seats. I find this very difficult to believe as Britax (Roamer) are
still making other seats for Mazda and seats with transponders for
Mercedes and Vauxhall (Opel). More likely is that Mazda wanted to stop
paying the licence fees. I have not tried a Vauxhall seat.
Mazda has dropped a real clanger with their ‘use’ of this system and lack of customer service.
Steweylewey,
Do you have pics of it? If it is working it is also an option for me. I have a little son, and summer 2010 he is about 1 yr so it must be possible to drive topless with him next to me.

Okay, I’ve just bought a used childseat (up to 9 months) for a mercedes on Ebay.
I’m going to trie if is also works for my dutch mx-5.
Greetings Martijn
G’day Miko, long time since you last posted, hope all is well with you and the family—
I did a quick search on the old forum and came up with this

Hi Guys,
This is my first post. I am desperate looking for a transponder for a Romer Duo Plus. I have read that Mercedes ASKE may disable the airbag, but I would like to be sure. My Mazda is a Mx-5 mk2.5.
Best regards,
Pedro
Today (wednesday 6 january) I’ve received the mercedes seat that I’ve bought by Ebay.de.
And… It works!!!
The cost that I spend, included shipment, where less then €40,- (ap. 35 pounds)
As it looks without Mercedes AKSE seat.

And the passenger airbag is disabled!
Interested to hear about this in a MkII - is there any indication on the dash that it disables the passenger airbag? I see from the photos posted the instruments are on a Mk2.5 which obviously differ (slightly) from the older car.
I take it you haven’t had any problems? I’m desperate to hang on to the car for as long as possible with the inevitable arrival…
Hi all,
I also bought from e-Bay a Mercedes Baby Seat, and it works wonderfully. Thanks for the advices :-).
Best regards,
Pedro
Anyone actually know whether these transponders work to disable the airbag in a mk2. I can see that the system works for the mk2.5 but I have a mk2 and would like to get the airbag disabled as well. Anyone know a system for doing this or whether the transponders work for the mk2 as well?
