Doddery clutch

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __mk3 launch
  2. I’m based near: __essex
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __clutch judder

Hi I’ve had a complete engine rebuild and thought I may as well get a new clutch kit fitted , went for one of these Quinton Hazell QKT1435AF 3-in-1 Clutch Kit

That was 3 months ago. The clutch is juddering in first gear when the engine is running on e10 fuel but is much better, hardly noticeable when running on e5 fuel.

Do you think the clutch is just bedding in, a poor clutch or should I just fill with e5 from now on?

Done almost 1000 miles since rebuild and the engine is super smooth.

Chris

The type of fuel can not affect the clutch action. Are you sure you are describing the issue correctly?

Yes clutch judder on first pull away, more noticeable on a steep hill when slipping the clutch. Not so evident while the car is running in e5 petrol. Maybe due to having slightly larger pistons as it’s had a complete rebore?

I’m thinking, although car runs great on E10 and doesn’t hesitate or stall but needs slightly higher revs than running on e5 when pulling away from stationary. So more slipping of the clutch to refrain from shooting off

A clutch shudder/judder is usually the symptom of a warped/worn flywheel.

Did you have the flywheel skimmed or replaced when you have the clutch changed recently?

Maybe it’s not the clutch it’s the engine telling you to use E5 petrol. My last NC had a remap to 180, totally run better more evenly at low revs and idle on E5 than E10.

No flywheel wasn’t replaced or skimmed I don’t think but it’s strange there is virtually unnoticeable judder with the engine running on E5.

I get more mpg with E5 fuel and it’s probably more healthy for the rebuilt engine so yes E5 and maybe a remap too .

I completely rebuilt my 2.0 NC1 sport motor and used a new 3 piece Exedy clutch.
Apart from the clutch feeling lighter than the one I removed - they operate exactly the same on E5 or E10 fuel.

Just to update on this weird problem. I had driven 1000 miles since the engine rebuild so I decided to change engine oil and filter, unbolting access panels for better clearance and inspection. I did find 2 lower bolts which hold the gearbox to the engine quite loose not even finger tight! Now everything is back together, and bolts tightened the problem with the clutch has cleared.
