I’m a bit fanatical about keeping my 5 looking pristine as I suspect are many within this parish.
On my daily driver, a Fiesta, I have fitted door edge protection my way of clear plastic strips (from Halfords) that sit nicely and unobtrusively without much ado. They are held in place by some double sided 3m tape on the inside lip of the door.
I am slightly paranoid that at some point in am going to open the door of my MX- 5 onto something nasty with potential to chip the door edge. The shape of the 5 door is very curvy to the extent I’m not sure that the regular door edge protection will bend around it and still hold in place, even with the tape holding it there.
What do others do? Does anyone have any solutions to suggest? Do you feel door edge strips look a bit naff on the 5?

I was thinking about protecting our door edges but I think I’ve decided against it as I don’t want to spoil the lines. I was going to get hold of some clear vinyl that’s self adhesive. I can’t remember the make off hand but it’s used to protect bicycle frames. You can also buy small pieces of vinyl wrap that’s quite easy to apply. I put some on my motorbike tank to stop the seat rubbing. It’s pretty good but the edge of it does look a bit like a scratch from some angles.
yes I’ve seen some products on the market that appear to be a thin self-adhesive clear strip. But then I wonder if it would be robust and thick enough to cope with, for instance, accidentally opening the door onto a wall? ![]()
You’re right, the clear stick-on ones from Halfords don’t really flex enough - one one my drivers door (the one you need the most), has come off, leaving the tape behind! I’ve used them on ‘straight’ doors, and they work well.
The stuff I’ve used is Bike Shield, its available from Wiggle. It’s not cheap but it is tough.
Can you post up a link Nick? I’d be interested to peruse. ![]()
We are using the cheap, simple push on ones on ours.

They are clear and on the white are reasonably unobtrusive. They need a little bending but with some warmth and flexing are now a good shape and have not fallen off yet. You do need to take them off to clean the door and the groove when the car is very dirty.
