Door trim removal tool

 Hello everyone,

I have a MK1 1997 MX5 1.8. The speakers are pathetic so I decided to replace them with some new ones from Autolink. Unfortunately my model of MX5 seems to require complete door trim removal to get at the speaker. I’ve ordered myself a Draper trim removal tool- but I’m not sure how to use it. Do I just insert it between the card and the metal of the door? Sorry newbie question and all that.

Many thanks.

I have a '91 car. If its the same as mine you can just pull the card off with a sharp tug, it’s on plastic clip in lugs. Obviously you will need to remove handles etc first.

I do have a trim removal tool, it is handy to have for other areas of the car.

Yeah, one part of the trim you definitely don’t need a tool for is door cards.

Open door, remove handle (small flatblade screwdriver on top blanking plate, then two big crosshead screws top and bottom, lifts off), then remove the screw on the lock side under plastic screw cover.  Remove the single screw behind the door release, and lift out the plastic back of the housing.

Now all you need to do is give it a bit of a tug around the edges, then lift the whole door card up and off.  If you’ve got tweeters in the doors then unplug these first.

Dead easy!

 Thanks both! Sounds straightforward enough.

Really appreciate the quick responses.

Thumbs up
