Dot 3 or 4 Clutch Fluid

Can anyone tell me if you can use Dot 4 Brake/Clutch fluid on a Mk1 1994 Eunos. The caps on both reservoirs are marked “Use Dot 3 Fluid only” and the MX5 service manual on cd  quotes SAE J1703 or FMVSS16 DOT 3  but the Manual that covers both the UK model and the Eunos states you can use either.

After releasing the clutch and flying out of the garage due to the pedal operating about an inch from the floor, I’ve discovered that the fluid level in my clutch reservoir is right at the bottom. No sign of any leaks but have not checked it since I’ve owned the car so hopefully all will be ok when I bleed the system. The brake fluid is ok although wouldn’t hurt having a small top up but I have read somewhere it should not be mixed and don’t know what is in there at present. I dont really want to change the brake fluid for the sake of it.

Thanks

DOT 4 will be fine, but it sounds like your slave cyl is leaking, it’s on the rhs of the bellhousing, accessed through the r/h wheelarch. Peel back the rubber bellows on the push rod. If any fluid comes out then it’s definitely the slave.  Pretty easy job to change it.

Andrew,

I picked up a slave cylinder today on a sale or return basis so will have a look in the morning and with a bit of luck either way will be able to get it sorted in time for the nice sunny weekend thats been promised!

Thanks for your reply
