Drilling the air box on a MK1 MX5

 Hi.

Has any one drilled out the cold side/bottom of their air box to give a throatier sound.I am thinking of doing it but wonder if there are any down sides to doing it before I get going with the drill.

How many holes are needed and what size is recommended.

Thanks for relies

I did 9 x 22mm diameter holes (using a cordless drill and those wood-boring flat drill bits) originally and it sounds great (bit like a BDA 1600 on twin 40s)and gives a better throttle response either with a standard filter or with the K&N panel replacement.

Just make sure you only drill the cold inner wing side, front and back and only below where the filter element sits.

My advice is to get another filter box from a scrappies or ebay and do the drilling on that one. You will find the fuel consumption will increase i nitially as you tend to get addicted to the sound and the reaction of pedestrians as you roar up the highway (without breaking any speed limits, obviouslyRolling eyes) but once to revert to your usual driving style you will find the fuel consumption will settle to what it was before. Just be aware as far as insurance company operatives are concerned this probabably constitutes a modification yawn…

If you dont like the new sound or sell the car to someone sensible just put your original airbox back on.

 Thanks for your reply.

Thats my Saturday sorted out!!!

I should also mention that it will also sound a bit flat like a half broken Hoover when on tick-over, or an old-fashioned Roots-Type supercharger if you prefer…Big Smile

If you haven’t already done it, I have an airbox I pulled out of mine that has had the bottom cut out if you want to try it. It’s just sat in the basement at the moment.

Thanks for the offer.Im now thinking of spending some of my money and buying a kit to fit.Has anybody a suggestion of the correct kit for a MK1 mx5 1993 NA model.

Thanks again.

Dont drill it , thats just a cheap c*ck up,  get yourself a K & N off e-bay and be done with it, and it’s right.
