Driveability of 88BHP versus 115 BHP.

 Hi.

Has anyone else here noticed that when stepping from a 88BHP car (UK Spec 1.6 post 1995) to a 115 BHP one, the “powerband” seems to have shifted up the rev range?

My 88BHP engine has, I’m sure, got a beter bottom end than the common/garden Eunos one - probably tops out earlier, though.

Am I the only one that notices this? Thinking

Mazda’s intention was to do that see http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/forum/forums/t/1422.aspx

“Poverty spec” - a little harsh, though humorous and accurate (no leather, power steering, power windows or ABS )Big Smile

Thanks for the link.

I thought I wasn’t imagining things!

We try not to talk about the 80 odd hp version, bit like trying to get excited over a Diesel TT… unless its a young driver and the only way for them to get onto the insurance.

That might have been amusing with a couple of smilies, but without, it’s just downright rude

Typical

 Typical what?

If you don’t know there is no point talking to you. Lets put a stop right now and let the op get on with his thread

Any more and you’re going in the “naughty corner” Wink

The 88 BHP model ain’t all that bad, you know…

It even has exactly the same handling as the more powerful version. After all, MX5’s are all about handling & not power - no?  Thumbs up

Oh, and Taff Eunos - my mate Clive says thanks for leaving a “Dr Eunos” card on his windscreen a couple of weeks ago in Maesteg (Gold Mk11). He now has another contact to help him along in MX5 ownership.

True, upon reflection they are probably a very good way of re-converting to rear wheel drive. Pass on my regards to Clive too.

Did you hear we have a run coming up on 28th November starting from Cardiff Gate Services at 11am? Be good to meet up Big SmileBig SmileBig SmileBig Smile

Love you really Geoff Waving apologies from Dr. Eunos

I did the “Brass Monkey run” earlier this year with my daughter in the passenger seat to try out the MX on a run - it was good fun. My understanding is that I will now have to join the SWOC if I intend going on another.

I’m afraid that I just don’t have the commitment to join a club at the moment. With two kids, Real Life ™ gets in the way, sometimes.

My impression of the folk that went on the runs were that they were mostly retired couples or “empty nesters” who had more time for this type of socialising.

Good luck with the run - I can commend a run with The South Walians to anyone.

Hi when trying MX5 I did not know the specs varied so much but I found that the 115BHP car had more of an on-cam performance and on the ones I tried it also came with faster power steering so it was a bit more lively when pushed. Mine has a lower final drive so I did not notice any difference at low speed to be honest but it is a bit short geared for long journeys. So my thought was the higher power version was more fun as an occasional use car, but less practical for day to day use. So more different rather than one good another bad. But it is based on cars  I drove, it could be there is more mix of ratios and engine power than  I know. Handling is good regardless and as long as its fun its not like the MX5 is about all out power is it, its more fun than that Big Smile

 Hi.

Owning a 90 BHP 1997

I would say its a better drivers car,  Lighter,  Better feel of the road. … More pure

Seat of the pants driving

No ABS can be ‘’ fun ‘’

I would put mine up against a 115 BHP model any day,

And it revs like mad.

Funniest thing I ever read on hereDancing, but it should really be in the daily jokes thread?
