Droplinks ARB play

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC1

Hey everyone, I had some issues with knocking and I realised it was the droplinks on the ARB, however I noticed the notice was from the droplinks having play in the hole of the ARB, as if the hole is to big. Same issue on both sides. Do I need a new ARB? the hole in the control arms is a very snug fit.

Pretty sure from memory that the holes in the ARB and the Wishbone are both the same size.

From your photo, it doesn’t look as if there has been any movement between the flange on the droplink and the ARB. If the the noise has been evident for some time, one would expect the interface between the two components to be chafed or even have become shiny with the movement . Additionally, some wear or shinyness on the internal circumference of the ARB hole might be expected if the noise was caused by the droplink stud clunking up and down inside if the hole is too big (or the droplink stud too small). If you’re convinced the movement is where the stud goes through the ARB hole, can you be sure the nuts were fully tightened when previously fitted? It would be surprising if the ARB has the wrong sized holes at both ends, unless someone’s replaced the original or the droplinks with mis-matched components.

I bought new droplinks and yes the hole on the ARB is too big, I can tell where they played over time it got a bit bigger. No matter how much I torque them it plays over bumps. I need a new ARB.

31.8 - 44.8 ft lbs is the torque setting in manual, so if you’re at the upper limit of that range and there’s still movement when driving on uneven surfaces, it seems another ARB may be your only option. :frowning:
