I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Attaching spoiler
Hiya all,
I’ve always wanted a ductail spoiler for my 5 and have recently found a decent one, looks good, not too expensive, seems legitmate quality.
My question mainly is, hwhat would the best bet be for attaching this? My main thoughts is with the strong 3m tape as i’ve heard good things and can be reversed if necessary, and doesn’t require drilling my boot.
That’s what was recommended on the sale listing as well, but was just worried if that can cause any damage to the paint or anything if it had to be removed down the line?
The chance it will damage your paintwork if removed is YES . But at the same time if you use screws you have holes to fill and paintwork. 3M body tape is OK for door side trims i’d never trust it to hold a spoiler on just by its self.
Just use clean rag to wipe it off before it drys.
Usually then dip finger in water and smooth over the si!icone to get a neat finish.
You dont want any silicone showing ideally so doing this should clean it off.
I assume you can do this with tiger seal as well.
The Tiger seal will wipe off easy with a rag and white sprit before it go’s off . Just run a wet finger around the edge as well to smooth off There is no silcone in tiger seal as they use it in bodyshops sillcone and paint is a no no.
Just weighing up whether to buy a different bootlid to put it on because I’m not very handy when it comes to stuff like this and its bound to be a bodge job!
Struggling to find an Aluminium Silver bootlid for sale anywhere though.
Give it ago, whats the worst that can happen?
Dry fit first to check the fit is ok to your boot lid, as in the photo posted. Once you have done this use the tiger seal sparingly to avoid it squeezing out and fit and clamp it in place until dry. If it squeezes out clean it off before it dries.
This looks like the one on Ebay, I am considering one as well. Are you painting it or leaving it black?
Yes, its one of those on eBay. I was going to leave it black. Its finished quite nicely as it comes and it sits well with the black roof and wheels. Might take the bootlid off the vehicle to install it aswell.
Hi all new user but I can potentially help on this. My day job is developing interior and exterior trim and I have designed and tested side rubbing strips for OEM’s. We just use 3M VHB tape for most things now. The key is both surfaces need to be super clean and the temperature needs to be above 18 degrees C. After a few weeks in an environmental chamber I’ve never had a failure other than chromed parts and the plastic breaks before the bond. Only way of getting the residue off is a rubber wheel.
