For our first outing in July, The Eastern Region are making the trip to Caister Castle and Motor Museum which is probably the largest and certainly the best privately owned motor collection open to the public in the UK.
The Museum
With very many fine and rare veteran, vintage, classic, sports and touring automobiles and motorcycles, the collection contains more than 120 cars and 100 bikes and ranges from an 1893 Panhard et Levassor, the first real car in the world - through to a 1990’s customised Harley Davidson.
Various steam cars and electric vehicles are included as well as Jim Clark’s Lotus, Peter Rachman’s Cadillac and the very first Ford Fiesta. Displayed in a purpose built exhibition centre recently extended from approx. 25,000 sq ft to 35,000 sq ft, the collection is complemented by displays of bicycles, horse-drawn vehicles, baby carriages, pedal cars and other related items.
The Castle
Caister Castle was commissioned in 1432 by Sir John Fastolf. The 90 foot tower remains intact and visitors can climb to the top for a magnificent view of the castle ruins and the surrounding area. The castle is of historical interest both because it is one of earliest buildings in England of importance to use brick as the main construction material and because of its connection with Fastolf and later the Paston family.

The Cowans are keen to join the trip to Caister Castle and, particularly, the Car Museum - one of the best in the East. We will touch base with those from the Cambridge Meet who contemplate the run and other pleasures of the day. Regards Anne & John
Hi Barry,
I am contemplating joining the drive but have another event to attend aswell on the day. What time are you estimating to arrive at the castle?
Cheers
Doug
This sounds a great trip out on Sunday. I’m Bury St Edmunds based & would like to join your trip to Caister with my son. It would be good to join you on route, if this is possible. Is there still room for an NC & do you have any suggestions where we can meet up on route from Kings Lynn?
Always room for o few extra cars/people, so please come along and join us.
The Kings Lynn cars will be coming in from North of Norwich, so I think it would not be feasible for you to meet us en route, however, there are a few cars (5 or 6) coming up from the Cambridge area, who will RV fairly close to Bury. As soon as I receive the RV Point and Time, I will send it over to you and if it suits you, please feel free to join them.
Failing that we expect to reach Caister between 12:00 -12:30
Our good friend John Cowan has arranged a proposed meeting point for the non-King’s Lynn departures at
Shell Service Station Barton Mills Roundabout [A11]: Meeting Time 10:20 and depart by 10:45 At Caister Castle and Motor Museum: Arrival Time: approx. 12:00
John has estimated that most Eastern Region members will be within one hour’s drive of the Barton Mills Roundabout. (On the A11 very near Mildenhall)
The Shell Service Station is very obvious from any road that joins the five ways roundabout and is readily reached - there is a large parking area that is normally empty, so even MX5’s are easy to see.
There are options for the return journey that don’t adhere to the A11.
Hi Barry
Not sure if my message reached you from scorching France last week, but please could you add Karen and I to the run on Sunday.
We will join you at Kings Lynn.
Thank you for a great day out. James & I really enjoyed the museum & castle/grounds. The trip up was good seeing a line of 5s, although the rain didn’t help. Had a dry trip back once we were clear of Great Yarmouth with top down cruising along the A143 was just the perfect end.
