EBC Turbogroove brake discs

My front discs are warped and I came across this https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/discs-pads-package-ultimate-sports-mk2-25-standard-p-3056.html

The package consists of the below for £407 which doesn’t seem to be bad

Set of four quality EBC Turbogroove brake discs together with a full set of EBC Greenstuff brake pads and a full set of great quality stainless steel brake lines, and brake fluid to fit them! With this kit offering great savings over the individual parts, there has never been a better time to get your brakes in perfect working order!

The package is made up of -

  • 1 x Pair of Front drilled, slotted and vented EBC Turbogroove discs
  • 1 x Pair of Rear drilled and slotted EBC Turbogroove discs
  • 1 x Set of EBC Greenstuff Front Brake Pads
  • 1 x Set of EBC Greenstuff Rear Brake Pads
  • 1 x Set of Hel Performace Stainless Steel Brake Lines
  • 2 x 1 Litre bottles of Brake Fluid
Has anyone had any direct experience of these and are they worth the additional £150 over the standard setup.

Do they provide the same braking experience as standard, just more of it or are they snatchy etc.

I wouldnt bother with grooved or drilled discs, they dont do anything apart from make more dust and more noise. Same for the EBC pads, I am currently running Greenstuff - but wont be replaced with EBC when they wear out!!

Save your money unless you are going track side. They also “whistle” when breaking hard.

The standard ones work fine, having said that I use “green stuff” pads, which for me are better.

John

It would be £10 cheaper if you bought all that from me, however, as has been said above, the standard discs would work out at £342 and they are UK made EBC ones too.

I’ve just fitted this Ferodo set below, all good but just bedding them in, come complete with carrier clips. The same supplier has the rear set for around £68, I just renewed the rear pads as the discs were still good, Pagid pads for £18.

Have read myself re above comment on grooved or/and drilled discs and I considered it wasn’t worth it for ordinary road use, you pays your money and all that.

I used Green Stuff before on my MK2 front discs and the only difference I noticed from the previous no name pads was that they created a lot more dust. I never got brake fade on a long spirited drive on either pad but never tracked the car.

Can you link to a published test done under controlled conditions that measure any improvement over non slotted and drilled discs for the discs you wish to purchase will give in the conditions you will be driving them under?

Sorry, I like to separate marketing claims from proper tests done under controlled conditions by a third party.

EBC will tell you themselves that the grooved discs make no difference to braking performance with modern pads. The requirement for grooves etc. went with better pad design. The actual purpose of the groove is to remove debris from under the pad. It is not an issue, they do however look very “cool”

EBC pads!!!

Years ago were ok, now rubbish [in my view]

PS: Primarily, holes and grooves in discs are designed to break up a gaseous layer between pad and disc if the pad gets too hot and the resin boils off [hard pedal but no brakes]

Secondarily, they also help clear water.

Finally, grooves also act as a wear indicator.

Holes simply fill up in no time and can encourage cracks in the disc as they are drilled which splits the grain,

Standard road use - solid is fine.

I use grooved on track.

I had EBC grooved discs and Green Stuff pads on my NA, fine on the road but had scary fade after a couple of laps of Blyton which I never had with the standard set up, now gone to standard (big) discs and pads on the front which with the grooved discs and green stuff pads on the back.

Guys

Thanks for all the feed back, looks like I’ll stick with standard discs and pads.

BTW @Drumtochty

No I can’t link to a published test etc and I also like to cut through the marketing bullshit which is why I asked here for people who have direct personal experience.

Not really sure what point you’re trying to make…

To everyone else thanks a bundle for pointing me in the right direction.
