After driving up a mountain the other day the engine got rather hot and the electric fan came on when parked. However, it did not continue to run with the ignition turned off.
With previous cars, the fan would continue running with the ignition switched off until the engine cooled.
I have had cars that do continue to run the fan after you’ve turned ignition off but had plenty that stop with the ignition off. I’ve never heard my MX5 fan running after I switch off so that probably is the way they are.
If you think about it, there doesn’t seem much point in running the fan as the coolant isn’t circulating round the engine once it’s turned off. It’s just cooling what’s in the radiator.
In addition to a couple of switched power lines, the PCM has power from the Room fuse which is always ‘hot’ so in theory could run the fans after switch-off.
The fact it doesn’t run the Fan after s/o suggests a deliberate decision not to. As Ian_G suggests, there is not much point in running on after.
Nothing to do with 5’s but I take a new works VW Transporter home the fans run on so long after and so noisy you can hear it in the house and neighbour’s have been round thinking I’d left the engine running and it goes on for about 10-15 minutes…and that’s after just a 20 minute journey
I’ve noticed this on our Eunos 1.6 but guess it is the same on the 1997 MK1, just never gets hot enough to run the fan.
Feels unsatisfactory to hear the fan cut out when engine turned off but as already said, without circulation there is absolutely no point in it continuing to run. Sensors would pick up temperature from coolant in engine that will take a lot longer to cool down because of the slow dissipation of heat from metal. Fan only really serves to cool rad although minimal cooling effect in engine bay.
Ideally in these circumstances circulation would continue and fan run until temperature reduced. Having said that the fan cuts in when temperature is high, not when the engine is about to explode so no biggy really.
