Emissions Failure

  1. My model of MX-5 is:2.0 NC 2006 __
  2. I’m based near: Scottish Borders
    Hi all
My 2006 2.0 NC failed its MoT yesterday because of exhaust emissions. I had a feeling it might because I’ve installed a ML Motorsport stainless manifold but have not had the ECU re-tuned yet. Am I correct in thinking this is the reason and if I get the remap done the emissions will be OK for passing the test?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I have the IL Motorsport Manifold.
I also had a full proper remap done.
This mapped out the manifold sensor system with no EML’s coming on.
I also have the Mazda Centre cat and pipe still along with a few other mods on the exhaust.
Obviously, you will still need a decent cat in the system to comply.
Mine has passed the emissions test every year since 2016 with no issues or Testers getting excited about matters.
The actual emissions results are very good.
At the end of the day I had an email from the head of DVSA stating what I had done does not break any rules for the test.
As he said as long as what you do still keeps the emissions within the regulations then that’s fine.
Others I know will disagree and get a bit excited about it all.

Thank you for your response. I read your 2021 report and found it useful.
I also have a cat back system on but the centre section with original cat is still in place. The car has only done 36k miles. Dont know if that helps with the condition/quality of the CAT. Will a “plug and play” remap be sufficient or does the car need to go on a dyno etc?

Just my opinion I would say a full proper dyno remap would be best.
Even my local Mazda Main Dealer didn’t blink an eye when I took it to them to fix in January and they knew about the mods.
Mine is a 2013 with around 34K if that helps.
I know not about a plug and play and suspect it “might” be limited.:man_shrugging:
Perhaps others maybe able to assist with that for you.
Good luck.:+1:

The cats are known to fail. Both of mine exploded at 140K and it still barely passed with the 2nd cat damaged and the first completely missing.

I would verify your MAF sensor, spark plugs, air filter, coils etc are all good and give it a nice oil/filter change. Make sure the garage warms it up very well. Idling isn’t enough sometimes with a single cat.

You can relatively easily undo an O2 sensor and insert a boroscope if you’re used to car work - but if you have no tools at all maybe it’s best to try something else first.
